@kaveinthran@disabled.social I remember first encountering it in 2006 and installing it. I didn't think much of it. I can't pinpoint when I started to rely on it more and more...but finally last year, I switched to it ful-time for personal use when JAWS just stopped working, and I have no regrets.

I knew some basic things about screen readers, but then I've discovered that JAWS was not the only in the market. WindowEyes, SystemAccess, Dolphin SuperNova, Narrator and... boom! NVDA got me. Maybe temporal things, but the first version I've tried was NVDA 0.5, then advanced to the 0.6 versions. When my computer was repaired cause of a damage, they installed NVDA 2011.3. Now since 2012 it's my primary.

@kaveinthran@disabled.social I have been a jaws user since 2003 at the age of 11. My friend actually taught me how to use that screen reader, it was the first one I ever learned. I was low vision as a kid, so also relied on other tools. But I digress… In 2014 my partner @Lprazdnik@mindly.social, a few friends, and I were talking about @NVAccess@fosstodon.org. Partner and I decided to have a friendly wager, he had been a Jaws user for quite a while as well. The wager was, use NVDA as a primary screen reader for an entire month, which one of us wouldn’t make the month? 🤔 Spoiler alert: we both did 🙌🏻 We have used NVDA as our primary screen reader on PC ever since. Years later, job: my job does supply jaws to all employees upon higher, but during my on boarding process I asked if NVDA could be installed alongside jaws adding that I know jaws, I will use it if necessary, but prefer NVDA for a whole host of reasons. Free, faster, navigation is more intuitive, I could go on and on and on 😂💻 #NVDA20

@kaveinthran@disabled.social I first tried NVDA I think in 2008. It was before they started using years as version numbers I remember that much. I didn't really get it at the time and it seemed a bit of a mess, but hey you have to start somewhere and they had. Took me until 2011 before I started using it full time. the difference was like night and day and I haven't looked back. I've been encouraging people to give it a go since then as well as starting a guide for JAWS users interested in trying it, which has had a lot of helpful contributions. Really glad that has gone down well with both screen reader users and NV Access themselves. Here's to 20 more years. #NVDA20

I loved how the learning curve between it and JAWS, which was the screen reader I was using at the time, was so easy and did exactly what I wanted it to do. A friend of mine taught me how to use it, and he only had to spend a half an hour getting me through the basics including email, internet browsing, most of Microsoft Office and social media. I haven't gone back to any other screen reader since, and I won't as long as NVDA is around.
