Another day another company (Origin Energy) leaking my name DOB email phone number bank and credit card details and they're just like *whoooopsie soz* I seriously think companies should be banned from storing customer data until they can learn to store it securely. Or else force them to pay out each customer $50k per breach. That would stop it from happening pretty quick. 🤷

@phocks@bne.social them hoarding information after a specific financial transaction is complete creates what used to be known as an "attractive nuisance". There absolutely should be huge financial penalties. Someday they will have files of your facial print and finger prints. Just more digital data to be stolen with a USB drive by an underpaid employee or a hacker and a 123p@ssword. Your "one year of credit monitoring service" is worthless.

@phocks@bne.social Make them financially liable for every act of fraud committed using that stolen data. Then they might learn how valuable it actually is and stop insisting on storing it.

@phocks@bne.social About 10 years ago I worked on a website that processed credit card payments but we never had any need to store a CC number. We simply bundled up then encrypted the details of the payment and sent it off to the payment gateway provided by the CC bank. They sent back a Yes or No for success or failure. So I would be amazed if any company is stupid enough to store clients CC numbers.
