for those of you wondering why they would destroy the books after, it's twofold: 1. scanning books into an #ai model by removing the spine is cheaper than scanning them spine intact 2. by rendering them impossible to read, they avoid existing copyright law, because the uploaded, digital copy replaced the print copy, and then the print copy was taken out of circulation, thus avoiding any issue of creating illegal copies. books were written to be read by people. not chatbots.

@jamesrg@famichiki.jp The more books removed from circulation the more we become dependent on AI. Evil genius levels of BS here.

  • @jamesrg@famichiki.jp I don't understand what you mean by "uploading" a digital copy.

@jamesrg@famichiki.jp It was such a massive error to let the copyright fundies make the copyright law.

@jamesrg@famichiki.jp How does your point two work exactly? If big tech stole a source without buying a copy, it has no license. If it bought one copy, it has a license to use that copy. It's as if I retyped a copyrighted work, then threw away my source. How have I avoided copyright problems simply by commercially using my retyped version?
