@stefan_hessbrueggen@fedihum.org Copyright fundies have been pushing for copyright maximalism for decades, but as a "compromise", were willing to accede to some restrictions on works that are past their prime. As a result of the "compromise" between the copyright maximalist laws and the first sale doctrine, they're now in position where they get to dictate absurd prices for new books, but they're out of power about old books, as long as the old books' "copy number" is not increased. So, the genAIbros are following the stupid laws as they were "intended", by buying up books that have already been sold, meaning there's no new licensure negotiations with absurd price demands, and "transforming" them into a different form without increasing the "copy number", so "piracy" provisions can't kick in, either. And a massive, generational, libricide may ensue as a result. @jamesrg@famichiki.jp
