@pete@masto.hypertelia.com asks: I’ve just built a bike as a gift for a lass I’m dating, not entirely to woo, but it hopefully won’t do any harm! Q7. Have you ever given a bike to a date or even just a friend, purely to help share the joy of cycling (and because life is too short for anyone to ride a crap bike)? And how did it work out? #BikeNiteQ #BikeNite #BikeTooter #Cycling #MastoBikes cc @bikenite@fedigroups.social

@ascentale@sfba.social @pete@masto.hypertelia.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social #bikenite A7, After my Kona Mano Mano shuffled off this mortal coil with a sheared seat tube I got a Canyon Neuron to replace it. My wife, the awesome and incomparable Lea, rode it a few times and pronounced it suitable (“the full suspension is great because I don’t feel like I’m getting punched in the butt by the washboards”) she has been riding it ever since and we do a lot more riding together now. It’s hers. A friend made her this head cap.

@ascentale@sfba.social @pete@masto.hypertelia.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social A7. Happy to take friends and family to a bike co-op sale and help them find a bike which fits and will suit what they want it for. But in the end they choose. Because a lot of beginning cycling is about motivation, and if the blue bike motivates them more, you can't argue with that. Related: I have fitted a lot of baskets, bells and handlebar streamers to kids bikes, and upgraded a lot of tyres on adult bikes. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @pete@masto.hypertelia.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A7 I had a Gary Fisher Mendota hybrid I used for bike commuting for a couple years. When I moved, I only took what I could fit in my two door sports car and the bike didn't make the cut. I gave the bike to my best friend. To spread joy and share something that I liked but also knowing it was going to a good home that would appreciate it. He just had two kids and I imagined him using it with them as they got older. I'm still trying to get him to ride it more.

  • @ascentale@sfba.social @pete@masto.hypertelia.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A7: I'm long past the dating scene as we'll soon celebrate 45 years of marriage. But when one of my cycling friends married one of my employees, I gave the employee one of my bikes so that the happy couple could ride together. I'm happy to report the couple has now been married for over 10 years, so I suppose it worked out very well.

@ascentale@sfba.social @pete@masto.hypertelia.com A 7. Actually we did. When we bought our e-bikes, 2022, we gave our regular bikes to two Ukrainian refugees who lived in the city, as they said they liked to bike. We were challenged by language barrier, but they seemed super pleased when we delivered them to them. One was a Diamond Back bike my husband had bought in England, mine was an English Claud Butler Pagan. We gave them helmets as well and they seemed really happy and rode around the parking lot when we delivered them. We never heard another thing from them. Their social media never shows a bike at all. In our experience, when you give things to people, I'm not sure they really hold much value for them. I don't mean financially, but emotionally, maybe? Who knows. It's not just bikes. Perhaps, when someone has put some effort or time (and hard earned cash) into acquiring something that they really want, there's a different feeling, a different level of appreciation involved for the thing or the experience? This might sound a bit negative, but it's just our experience and yours may differ completely. These were strangers to us, so perhaps they have been riding happily around Halifax since then. (They just haven't shared any images of themselves doing so.) @StevenKennard@zeroes.ca

I’m STILL mad about it 8 years later. Sorry it’s not a feel good story. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @pete@masto.hypertelia.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social I was the giftee, not the gifter. And therein lay the problems We had very different body types, and riding use cases, so the 'hand-me-up' bike had many assumptions which resulted in a very poor match. But worse was transporting the bike, as the gifter was half a continent away. Ultimately, the cost of the bike to me (5 years ago) was about $2,000. Family. Everyone's got some. https://yt.chocolatemoo53.com/watch?v=mwm7yO9MMR4

@ascentale@sfba.social @pete@masto.hypertelia.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A7 we found an abandoned hybrid town bike dumped at the end of our street once, handed it to the police as lost/stolen, got it back three months later as unclaimed. Gave it to a family member who wanted a weekend ride bike. Within a few months he'd bought himself a shiny new road bike and was caught up in the weekly club rides from his local shop! Old brown hybrid got handed on to a friend of his

@ascentale@sfba.social @pete@masto.hypertelia.com @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A7. No, I have not, other than buying a new bicycle for my ex-wife and myself at the same time (before we were married, though we had been living together for nearly a decade at that point), but if I am ever lucky enough to find another woman who asks me to help her build a bicycle, I will propose to her on the spot, because that's how important bicycling is to me, now.
