I am currently conversing in a forum thread about Linux Audio, and a couple of developers are saying that it is not worth it to develop for Linux. They are complaining that Linux users are only a tiny fragment of the population, and it is a waste of development time. Is there developer here in the Fediverse that can give me some positive quotes of their experiences in Linux Audio development that I can give to balance the argument a bit? #Linux #LinuxAudio #MusicProduction #Plugins #VST3 #FOSS

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online linux audio is needed. By someone. Doesn't matter if it's one "someone" or the whole world. That's the only argument you need.

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online my (about to be released) product is cross platform. Works on Linux (x86, not there with arm yet). Definitely see a lot more people complaining about windows. Feels chicken and egg to me. “Can’t use Linux cos there are no products “ Anyway happy to develop for it & will continue to do so.

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online I only know that @samaaron@mastodon.social has had a lot of struggle getting audio on Linux running for his SonicPi project. Maybe he has a more constructive less economic opinion about audio on Linux, as it is an FOSS project. Oh, and live-coding (like: programming) your audio is really awesome.

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online Maybe the https://milkytracker.org/community/ can support on their Matrix channel. Same as for Sonic-Pi: FOSS nerdy niche, so more realistic pain points expected.

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online I was just hanging with my friend that built out a Dell Server for AV art. Forwarded this his direction (also hoping to drag him kicking and screaming into Fedi). Might have to print this and walk down to his shop and clobber him with it. BRB

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online If they're developing for client apps (audio editor, music player, etc) maaaybe they have a point. If they're talking games, then I would hope that uttering the words "steam deck" would be enough to convince them

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online I've been developing VST, game engine & middleware plugins for almost 5 years and my main OS is Linux. As a consequence, all our plugins are also available on Linux, no showstoppers whatsoever. I also run Windows and macOS out of necessity, since our products are multi-platform and some compiler toolchains are only available on Windows. Customer demand on the other hand is quasi non-existant since nobody targets native Linux. Shame, because Audio on Windows has been a dumpster fire for more than 20 years and there's no end in sight. Pipewire is so much better than WASAPI it's not even fair. Edit: I should add that apart from JUCE or the respective game engine/middleware sdk, we completely rolled our own stack with only std lib dependencies, which puts us in a good position. If you depend on any system libs, that's where your life starts getting miserable.

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online I'm not a dev (though I've written some midi related code here and there). You might point out that there are musicians just waiting to move to linux when it gets good enough for their musical purposes. I use linux more than mac these days but I still use a mac for music. I tried to move music to linux in 2019 and came away disillusioned, but I'm ready to try again as soon as things improve a bit. The main thing linux lacks for music, from my POV is manufacturer device drivers. They perform significantly better than usb class compliant on mac. But they don't exist on linux. Getting some key plugins I rely on on linux would also really help. If fabfilter, 3body, dmgaudio, TDR would all make linux versions and proper drivers were avail for my interfaces I would switch again for music. OTOH Reaper, Bitwig, Painoteq, and U-he are all linux native already it's a great start!

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online apparently over 5% of steam users are now on linux. So still a minority, but if you're willing to shed 5% of your potential userbase just because you can't be bothered you're probably not the kind of person who makes very good work. https://tech.yahoo.com/gaming/articles/over-5-steam-users-now-095001519.html

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online I'd say talk with Amadeus Paulussen about his project - https://linuxaudio.dev/ The juice reports are usually gated by competitive interest, sadly, but if you look hard enough, you can find greybeards who still maintain archives (like this one) and nodes for what is out there.

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online Linux needs all the contributions to enrich its open ecosystem. That is how we get rid of macOS and Windows from our day to day life.

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online there was a blog post about game dev where they said that Linux is a small player base, but the one that gives you the most and best quality feedback… might apply to other kind of dev? https://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/qeqn3b/despite_having_just_58_sales_over_38_of_bug/

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online Bitwig made me switch my amateur/fun music project from Windows to Linux. It completed the transition. Music was the last thing keeping me on evilcorp.
