Great news: in the 5 years 2020-2024, know how many 20-24 year olds died of cervical cancer in England? ZERO. That's the first cohort of folks that age who were offered the HPV vaccine when they were 12 or 13. Before the vaccine was used, on average about 20 people in that age range died of cervical cancer in a 5 year span. We're looking forward to more dramatic results as that group enters their 30s & 40s. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c621z28z138o #HPV #Gardasil #vaccines

@jeneralist@mstdn.science I can't find any reference to which vaccine we're talking about here, is it gardasil 9 or a newer, better one? (I knew someone who had pre-cancerous lesions from one of the much rarer HPV strains against which gardasil 9 doesn't safeguard)

@jeneralist@mstdn.science That's great! I've got to go read the research. (I wonder if it also compares against unvaccinated 20-24 year olds in the same time period, or maybe if they wouldn't have enough data.)

@jeneralist@mstdn.science I wouldnโ€™t expect the #bbc to mention this but it is not news. Cervical cancer vaccines have been routine in #scotland since 2008. https://publichealthscotland.scot/news/2024/january/no-cervical-cancer-cases-detected-in-vaccinated-women-following-hpv-immunisation/

@jeneralist@mstdn.science This vaccine has been offered in Scotland since 2008. A pity the BBC article can't distinguish between "UK" and "England" in this important context. https://publichealthscotland.scot/news/2024/january/no-cervical-cancer-cases-detected-in-vaccinated-women-following-hpv-immunisation/

@jeneralist@mstdn.science this is such good news. We have an hpv program in the Netherlands too, but the vaccination rate is still too low (62,9% girls and 59,3% boys aged 11-15 vaccinated). It still blows my mind that we have a vaccine against cervical cancer. I hope I'm part of the last group of women that has had to deal with it ๐Ÿฅบ Vaccinate your kids yall.

That "zero" is one of the most striking public-health results anywhere โ€” the first fully HPV-vaccinated cohort. The story now is the gap between that and stalled uptake elsewhere. Why a near-total prevention tool is still under-used: https://www.thebluf.news/p/hpv-vaccine-cervical-cancer

@jeneralist@mstdn.science The Lancet study behind this (Sasieni et al., June 2026) puts it at ~200 cervical cancer deaths already prevented โ€” and the researchers call that "the tip of the iceberg" as vaccinated cohorts age. Two caveats worth adding: UK coverage is still ~76%, short of the 90% WHO says elimination needs, and it's not just for girls โ€” HPV also causes throat, anal and penile cancers. We wrote it up plainly: https://www.thebluf.news/p/hpv-vaccine-cervical-cancer
