@signalapp@mastodon.world What happens when they find legal nudity? Is it noted somewhere for tracking (and monitoring)?

@signalapp@mastodon.world They’re giving in to populism, and the government isn’t listening to the experts. The police in the UK is already untrustworthy. What happens when they start arresting people for false positives?

@david@social.piconet.work 2026-06-08 21:56
@djsat2@mastodonapp.uk @signalapp@mastodon.world While I agree the big tech companies are untrustworthy too, there is a lot of evidence from organisations like HMICFRS that show the police are failing vulnerable adults and failing to conduct their complaints system in a lawful manner.

@djsat2@mastodonapp.uk @signalapp@mastodon.world @david@social.piconet.work what planet are you on? UK police trustworthy? Since when? Have you lost count of the number of coverups, fuckups, incompetence, overreaching in interpretation of the law, Palestine action case in point. Treatment of peaceful non violent protesters, case in another point. In short, no, the police cannot be trusted to look after the general public. They're here to protect the rich, the elite, the ruling class. Not us, never us. Forget this at your peril.

@signalapp@mastodon.world And if they end up mandating that, orgs like you guys should start a rebellian against it, rather than pulling the service away for UK users.

@signalapp@mastodon.world Propose a solution then. The current situation is untenable, and action is needed. Governments rely on experts to help shape policy. Given your expertise, pick up the phone and start advising.

@signalapp@mastodon.world If the govt just looked at how many data breaches is there every day, maybe they would realize that they want to open a huge hole for hackers to exploit. And they think that the perverts will use these apps instead of some other non-compliant (even illegal) apps... I mean they already do illegal stuff so... I don't know how much IQ is currently ruling the very united kingdom... maybe more than the very united states but still... might be closer than we though...

@signalapp@mastodon.world why is everything gone so 'end-of-days' with each and every issue? Religiously it's accurate to say the end is near but, I don't think that we know that it's because of 'A,B,C,...'

@signalapp@mastodon.world I saw this reported on Sky news today and you can understand why the average person agrees with it because there was no reporting on why this could a bad thing. How the purpose would likely be expanded and people will just get around it anyway. The UK government wanted to put back doors into apps like Whatsapp and other chat apps. A back door is a security hole that others will exploit and the UK government don't have a good track record with tech rollouts 🤔

@djsat2@mastodonapp.uk It sounds like you don't understand how it _could_ endanger people. But that doesn't mean it couldn't happen, just that you're not familiar enough with the possible risks.

@djsat2@mastodonapp.uk You really think the British police (this British police: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sus_law ) wouldn't abuse a power given to them that randomly flags wrong people as CSAM spreaders? Greater authoritarian control never made anyone safer. We know how to protect children, more safe third spaces with more people the kids can trust, greater community integration, more autonomy, more rights to make their own decisions. But those all run counter to the state controlling people's lives, so of course they are not considered.

@signalapp@mastodon.world Why won't Signal release/open source all of their backend infra automation scripts/tools/etc... There's no reasonable reason why a 501(c)(3) won't put this out there to make sure there's redundancy so we could built an alternate network if they're compromised by some gag order.

@signalapp@mastodon.world I think many of your points have merit, but what actually is your counter proposal to prevent online child criminal / sexual exploitation? I work in field where CSE is an issue and am keen to know how you'd address it.
