@f_o_tistic@autistics.life For both a design artist and a tattooist, you must look at their portfolio and see if their work looks like what you want. Any serious artist for hire has a portfolio you can view with no pressure or commitment. Look up tattoo shops in your area and their websites. As to the price, it will vary _widely_ depending on how booked up the artist is. Best bet is to find an artist you like, and an example from their portfolio, and ask “about how much for a design like this, in the size I want?”

@f_o_tistic@autistics.life Your best bet is to go straight to a tattoo artist with a concept or rough sketch, not finished work. Go to the shop in person. Do not email or text. It might be a waste of money/effort to commission a regular artist. Art for skin is different from art on paper. A good tattoo artist will want to take into account placement, etc. (Plus, little bit of a faux pas to come to a skilled tattoo artist with someone else's work and ask them to be a copier. Ruins some of their fun.)

@f_o_tistic@autistics.life I have a superb tattoo artist, who also does a lot of the working of the design to work as a tattoo (that can be very important). Look at their portfolio, more for the skills that you need - can they do realistic images, can they handle colour properly (if either of these are relevant). But I also know I was fortunate. I found one of the best in our area. It is especially hard for a first one, because you will not know the people or what sort of thing is right for you. If you can find an artist who has worked wit ha tattoo artist before - that will probably work well for you.

@f_o_tistic@autistics.life I commissioned @welshpixie@mastodon.art for a piece and I was very happy with it. Highly recommend them. I think I paid about £80 for the artwork at a similar size to what you're looking at, plain black ink work, and I was more than happy with that. Have spoken to a tattoo parlour and they're happy with the design too, now I just need to save up to get it done. It's going to be £300ish to get the tattoo done and I'd already have it done had life not been a bit lemony lately.

@f_o_tistic@autistics.life also instagram is a good place to search and look for tattoos and artists. some travel around and may come to a city next to yours or even your area, they announce plans quite into the future. would mean that you can't just walk in and talk live upfront but for inspiration it's great in any case. [got three tattoos by https://www.instagram.com/tattoo.bloom/ and will get more bc she is a great artist if one's looking for artful "organic" nature tats]
