@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us I’ve said this before and will no doubt say it again: you can’t become a doctor or a surgeon without qualifications and training, same goes for lawyers but any idiot can become a politician - zero training or even experience is required and we wonder why our countries are so badly run?!

@alex_p_roe@mastodon.world @ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us If you read Rory Stewart's book, it gives the strong impression that the civil service is also a sclerotic impediment to progress and that between the executive and the civil service, everything is fighting against * risk avoiding viscosity, * job preservation, * primacy of advancement over experience (length of job list vs time in post), * expertise phobia & elevation of ignorance, * patronage, corruption & revolving doors

@alex_p_roe@mastodon.world Even those who have previously held down other jobs which did require qualifications and training seem to suffer a total and utter collapse of all intellectual (and moral/ethical) function once embarked upon a political career. Naming no names but I can think of one particular example immediately and I’m sure there are probably others.

@alex_p_roe@mastodon.world @ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us Ah, the wonders of democracy. Some steps that could be taken to improve democracy is to only allow votes to people who pay into the system. If you don't pay tax, you cannot vote, and you cannot become a politician. When it comes to politicians, there can be IQ requirements, requirements for an academic degree, they must pass language tests, they must have worked in the private sector for at least 20 years, we want no life time public leeches.
