@JulianOliver@mastodon.social Who is using no-IP’s dynamic IP thingy? (noip.com)? It monitors your dynamic ip and remaps a stable hostname to it quicly when it changes. (I have no need for it, but it is highly recommended by a friend of mine)

@JulianOliver@mastodon.social I have a #IPv6 /48 at home. I host all my services in a /64 of one of these. For people that need legacy connection to my services, they get piped through a CDN for access because I don't have time to deal with #IPv4 and #CGNAT garbage.

@JulianOliver@mastodon.social I map subdomains of one of my domains to services running in my home network. My webhost makes ddns very easy... have about 40 setup... and, as you can imagine, that's just n+1... ;-) All services (except the VPN) are behind a reverse proxy.

@JulianOliver@mastodon.social My ISP uses CGNAT on me so I added a little bit of infrastructure at hosting provider (firewall, reverse proxy) to make a few services reachable from the public internet.

I have more than one internet provider! None of them provides a static IP but they rarely change, and never yet all at the same time. And I'm not clever enough to take advantage of it. Or to host my own site. Just saying ...

@JulianOliver@mastodon.social Digi Romania uses CGNAT for IPv4, residential contracts only have dynamic DNS, you can request a subdomain on .go.ro or .home.ro. You cannot get a static IP for a residential contract, you must have a business contract, and each static IP costs €1-2/month. I personally just use Cloudflare Tunnel to forward my self-hosted services to my .alextecplayz.com subdomains, such as immich and vaultwarden, and previously radicale. I never use IPv6 since I don't know much about it and frankly networking was never my forte. But I think it works, you just have to set up the router to receive a dynamic IPv6 address from the ISP, there is no page on their site that mentions IPv6, and presumably there's no difference yet between residential and business for this.

@JulianOliver@mastodon.social so mine is probably "other" Based on the contract I have cgnat with changing IP. In reality we early on day 1 complained about an UDP VPN and v6 not working properly. Since then we still have daily disconnects but the ipv6 prefix and ipv4 appear to not rotate. I think it might have rotated once when docsis 3.1 was rolled out and we therefore had to switch our router. But I am not sure if this scenario counts as static. We seem to just have been set to a fixed external cgnat gateway due to the VPN I assume.
