macOS is so user friendly. Human Interface Guidelines and all that Might as well be using GNU/Linux

Was just chatting with my sister and had this realization about the current obviously incestuous AI investment cycle: It's like the rich people all saw the dotcom bust, the 2008 financial crisis, and the COVID bust and went "well all the rich people made out gangbusters in increasing amounts, if only we can top that!"

Rewrite of the connection status/request retry/error handling state machine in #GlobalTalk Chat is going well

Inspired by @fergycool and thanks to some iSight for MacOS 9 driver spelunking by @vga256 I am currently broadcasting a live feed of the Sakurajima volcano erupting on #GlobalTalk via QuickTime Conferencing. If I’m going to do this again I’m gonna need a longer FireWire cable… the driver is also in trial mode and quits after 30 minutes. #VintageApple #RetroComputing

I found the network rack gacha! Assumed it was so niche it would only be found in like Tokyo but there was one around my neck of the woods as well. This is the cutest thing ever! Look at the little cables and cable management hoops, the PDU, all of it is so well-done! #japan #gacha #networking #sysadmin #mb

Here's my second #MARCHintosh project for 2026 - TalkCrawler Lite! A little program to keep track of which #GlobalTalk printers and shares you've visited or left a greeting on! I rushed this one out so I can get to using it, so it's less polished than Chat, and might not work so hot on 68k Macs. I'm not sure why opening files is so damn slow. Demo video in the first reply. Available on Blackbird or landisk on the BaroNet share. #VintageApple #RetroComputing #mb

Could this be the first battery-powered, fully-wireless ImageWriter II in history? Well, it might at least be the first one on #GlobalTalk! Just in time for the end of #MARCHintosh, a cheap Farallon AirDock showed up on Yahoo Auctions, and since I already had one, I had to try this stunt - adding an IRTalk node to GlobalTalk. It is currently live on GlobalTalk if you want to try it, I'll probably leave it up until either the battery runs out or I deem it too much of a tripping hazard....

This is pretty cool. Apple's old Time Capsule devices run NetBSD, so in anticipation of their deprecation of AFP in the next version of macOS this guy got samba 4 running on it https://github.com/jamesyc/TimeCapsuleSMB

Rejected by Apple iOS app review: First we were rejected for having a restore purchases button when we only have consumable purchases and restore purchases does not apply to consumable purchases. We removed the button and resubmitted. Now we got rejected for not having a "restore purchases" button. #RejectedByAppReview #iosdev

I've come to terms with the fact that now that I actually own a printer, despite the type I get called on to actually print normal, day-to-day things, so I put in the effort to turn my raspberry pi into a CUPS server to re-share share the ImageWriter to my modern machines so I can print out PDFs without manually converting them to PNGs and booting up the G4 every time It's very weird to see an ImageWriter show up in iOS Thanks to @paulrickards for the guide in your blog! #Vint...

One thing I've learned is that Inside Macintosh is just the primer. It may look like all you need - it lists all the Toolbox functions and how they work, and walks you through how things ought to fit together! But in reality to make anything beyond TeachText you need to read: every Technote, every Q&A, skim every relevant sample code, every Snippet, and also read every issue of develop. Then you can start to approach being able to attempt to do something! #VintageApple #RetroC...

And it’s time for my fourth and final #MARCHintosh project for 2026, TalkCrawler AD. It’s an After Dark Module for TalkCrawler that will let you watch #GlobalTalk leisurely scroll past in one of two different styles There is a standalone version as well if you don't want to install After Dark Note you will need to run a re-scan in TalkCrawler Lite 1.4 (just released) before it can show anything Available on landisk/Blackbird on BaroNet. Announcing my third #MARCHintosh 2026 project - the MARCHintosh Canvas! If you're familiar with Reddit's /r/place, pxls space, or Wplace, you’ll know what this is - a shared canvas anyone can place pixels onto in real-time. Only this time, it's over the venerable AppleTalk protocol, with the public server accessible to anyone on #GlobalTalk :) Feel free to drop by and leave your mark - available in the usual places (landisk, Blackbird) on BaroNet #VintageApple #RetroC...

After a 5 day 24/7 stint as the #GlobalTalk Canvas server, today my $8 HARD OFF PowerMac G4 gave up. It started just infinitely boot chiming, giving me a scare. Pulled the plug as I had to run out for family stuff, but after coming back, she's dead… Luckily the HDD was unharmed, I was able to pull off the Canvas data file and the Canvas server is now somewhat peacefully co-existing with the Chat server on the G3 Wallstreet (although for some reason it did time everyone out once) #MARCH...

Introducing my first #MARCHintosh project - #GlobalTalk Chat 1.0! Now re-written from the ground-up as a native Mac Toolbox application in C. You can get it NOW on “Blackbird” or “landisk” in the “BaroNet” zone on GlobalTalk. #RetroComputing #VintageApple #mb (1/3)
