"AI is going to replace a lot of jobs." Ok, what do you think is gonna happen when you stop paying the "don't riot" bill? How long can you go without paying that bill before an angry mob is gonna come to collect? You can tell from their vacant eyes that they never considered that. They're gonna go in their bunkers... And then what? They all care about getting into the bunkers and never consider that the doors can be welded shut and the vents filled with concrete.

@Hex@kolektiva.social I see no evidence that the quality is good enough. Some companies that laid off are rehiring. It's hype.

@Hex@kolektiva.social this reminds me of something I read once... democracy is an agreement between the wealthy and the populace that in exchange for some control over governance, they won't drag the wealthy into the streets and beat them to death on a regular basis.

@Hex@kolektiva.social Decades ago I was in a car on the Mass Turnpike. The person driving decided to complain about why Mass paid toll booth collectors, after we came upon one collector who put down the book "Remembrance of Things Past" by Marcel Proust, to make change. (She had no idea who Proust was, I was impressed.) Said she "Why are we paying these stupid people to do this stupid job, a monkey could do this job!!!" I paused and said "Sure, a monkey could probably do this job, but not well, and throw coins and feces at you, but yeah, a monkey could do any job, even yours, but only an idiot would hire them." LLMs are the monkey hired by the billionaire.

@Hex@kolektiva.social I would suggest anyone reading this thread, if you haven't already, read Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut. Written in 1952 it is a very spot on dystopian story of where we might be heading, Pretty much exactly what @Hex@kolektiva.social is talking about. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Player_Piano_(novel) P.S. I think I'll reread it.

@Hex@kolektiva.social If both the means of production and labor (through autonomous systems) are controlled by corporations, society will solely depend upon them. Pair this with AI-monitored surveillance (the most broadly applied use of AI): able to trace rioters to the place they originated from; and I think you have most incentives in place to avoid said riots. Interrupt the initiators, and you prevent a movement from snowballing out of control; or simply beat it down with AI-powered robots (yes, really...).

@Hex@kolektiva.social something that gives me hope is that those building LLM's and distributing them for free have been using LLM's to make their decisions. We are still connected to our humanity.
