RE: https://kolektiva.social/@igd_news/117010156110002339 Before I got shot, I was trying to figure out how to organize against Trump. I found out about the Twin Cities GDC. They had made it relatively easy to organize a GDC chapter. We were working on getting chartered when I got shot. Twin Cities GDC sent people to help us get Greater Seattle Seattle GDC off the ground. One of their folks helped my partner make sure the house was secure. They gave all sorts of training. We used their "G...

We've reached some kind of dystopia singularity, where you can't write dystopian fiction anymore because things are worse than the society you had imagined by the time you finish fleshing out the idea.

If you want to know what Rubio is trying to do, go listen to the Revolutions podcast on 1848. Metternich built a conspiracy of kings that persecuted Liberals in order to protect European empires against revolution. It failed, of course, but he was able to hold things down (right until it all blew up in his face). The strategy was essentially mass surveillance, censorship, and general Draconian repressieve bullshit. Rubio is trying to slap together an actual international conspiracy of governme...

Popular Front recently did a piece on the current conflicts in Ethiopia: https://popularfront.substack.com/p/everything-you-didnt-know-about-the It's a good primer for anyone who's unfamiliar, but is definitely lacking if you know any Ethiopian folks or pay attention to much news out of the Horn of Africa. The interplay between authoritarian liberal nationalism, as represented by Abiy Ahmed and his government, and tribal federalism , represented by various tribal factions, reads to...

I keep seeing the "cars replaced horses" thing related to "AI." People keep comparing "AI" to cars (positively) without thinking about the fact that cars were forced on people (AAA bought up and destroyed tram lines, there were massive protests, etc), and are the primary driver of climate change that is currently on track to make complex human society impossible. Meanwhile, cities that weren't destroyed for cars, or that have reversed most of the damage, are so...

RE: https://todon.eu/@CrimethInc/116913952636548872 When this specific phase of history is over, and, perhaps, we've turned NWDC into some artist space like Seattle's Inscape, we'll put a statue of Willem in the center of the garden where those buses once were. It's not something he'd probably have liked much, but memorials aren't for the dead. They're for the living, to help us remember what to aspire to.

RE: https://tldr.nettime.org/@tante/116908308620011433 Though the DOJ clearly says that it would not prosecute this type of action, as it doesn't align with their objectives, this is a pretty clear violation of the CFAA (18 U.S.C. §§ 1030). It otherwise qualifies in every way as a federal crime. I'm not a big fan of laws but I do think it's worth noticing that some people end up in prison for decades doing shit like this while other people face no consequences at all. (Which, I gue...

RE: https://kolektiva.social/@Hex/116891026406639288 Yeah, I'm not done with this. How dystopian is it that so many people are physically trapped in their houses, that a whole society feels like it's just fine to wholesale sacrifice the safe mobility of children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, so everyone who can drive is able to sit and wait in long lines of giant metal boxes that pump out fumes that are literally making huge parts of the planet uninhabitable for humans. W...

The thing about training an #LLM on human culture and then renting that culture back isn't that it's "Intellectual Property Theft." There's nothing wrong with sharing. There is something wrong with framing LLMs as piracy. That's a completely different concept. When a powerful group of people takes the writing, the art, the music, various parts of a culture and then make some bland reproduction that lacks all the meaning and essence in the original, then those powerful...

If you're trying to learn Dutch in the Netherlands, eventually someone will mention "the Nuns." "Oh yeah," someone will say, "You should go to 'the nuns.' It's expensive, but you'll definitely learn." Several hundred years ago, the Nuns of Vught started a school for girls. They spread all over and were teaching in multiple counties. As a side effect, they got really good at learning languages. So they made a specific language school. Some law o...

RE: https://kolektiva.social/@Hex/116818040311334534 This is all in my mind because the white liberal promise (lie) has continued to shift more and more obviously. That original promise that "if you comply, your children will do better than you" was long ago replaced with "so long as you comply, you will do better than you did before." Anyone who bothered to check their much touted raises against inflation debunked that for themselves. But even the pretense of that promise...

LLMs can do a lot of the work people are tasked with doing on a regular basis, because a lot of the work people do is bullshit. The majority of what we do isn't to achieve any goal, it's a way to distribute just enough wealth to keep things calm while keeping us all too busy to actually make things better. We aren't paid to make stuff or do things. We're paid not to riot. Elites used to know that. The fact that they've forgotten how the machine works is e...

If you are an anarchist and you speak only one language, learn another one. Learn the language of your land, the indigenous language where you live. Learn the language of your ancestors, especially those languages that the state has tried to murder away. Learn an international language other than English, which have also been targets of state repression. Prioritize languages that you both have some connection with (because it's hard to learn a language you don't care about) and...

"It places page cache pages in a writable scatterlist, separated from the legitimate write region by nothing more than an offset boundary. The design assumes every AEAD algorithm will confine its writes to the intended destination, but nothing in the API enforces this, and nothing documents it as a requirement. Unfortunately, one AEAD algorithm breaks this silent invariant." "No other standard AEAD algorithm in the kernel [uses memory that doesn't belong to i...

A friend reminded me that today is remembrance day in the Netherlands. Tomorrow, May 5th, is Liberation Day, which celebrates the end of Nazi occupation. On May 4th, at 20:00, the whole country has two minutes of silence to remember those who were lost. There's something about this that is powerful. There's a statue that I pass by regularly. It is a monument to the resistance. It is a place where Nazis executed prisoners without trial as retribution for resistance. This evening...

Every now and then someone brings up #EffectiveAltruism, #TESCREAL, #RokosBasilisk, #Rationalism, or some other #Musk related nonsense. I ridicule it, or laugh, and move on. The whole evil god of Roko's Basilisk is so silly it doesn't feel worth writing about. But people started a whole cult over it and killed a bunch of people. Since then I've been meaning to actually spend time tearing it down. So I think it's time to go kill a god. Fortunately it involves making fun of Elon M...

Despite the windows they put up, rocks, bricks, and other such objects are naturally attracted to the interior of such places. It's folly to resist this, nature will always find a way.
