@jon_valdes@mastodon.gamedev.place yep automation bias is going to be chronic https://ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/20020041010

@jon_valdes@mastodon.gamedev.place I remember hearing anecdotally that they actually scaled back the use of autopilot in general because pilots weren't paying attention as much because of it & they needed to keep them engaged

@jon_valdes@mastodon.gamedev.place there is a great series of class videos on youtube about this and making pilots aware of automation dependence and the tragic consequences. It coined the great term "Children of the Magenta", named for the programmed flight path that the autopilot flies showing up in magenta on the flight displays.

@jon_valdes@mastodon.gamedev.place As Sully said about Flight 1549: "One way of looking at this might be that for 42 years, I've been making small, regular deposits in this bank of experience, education and training. And on January 15, the balance was sufficient so that I could make a very large withdrawal." There is always a need for constant practice in normal situations to be able handle things when things aren't normal. This is something I learned as a volunteer ski patrol when we had a session on dealing with stressful situations. It was taught by a military test pilot who also flew Chinooks in Afghanistan. He used Flight 1549 as the example for us of how years of training can kick in during a crisis. I now recognize the feeling of calm I get dealing with a crisis in our servers or dbs as basically the same as the one I got doing first response. All of which is to say is if you haven't done the work then when shit hits the fan you're not going to know what to do.

@jon_valdes@mastodon.gamedev.place AI autopilot would be wild we are cleared for FL350 Great! We're flying at 2000 feet right now, let me set the controls to descend to 35000 feet no! 35000 feet is higher than 2000 feet Good catch! You're absolutely right! [repeat ad arvum]

@jon_valdes@mastodon.gamedev.place Even when aeroplane is automated on a large scale, it relies on the quality of the flight planning. It still requires a lot of skills to plan the route to avoid potentially hazardous weather conditions, where even the best automation might fail more often. Pilots of commercial flights check weather conditions regularly to adjust the plans for changing environments, and while part of planning could be automated, humans need to do fact checking, on multiple levels (all the way from different airports to air traffic control to individual pilots).

@jon_valdes@mastodon.gamedev.place It is not a new fact that under-stimulation leads to over-stimulation.

@jon_valdes@mastodon.gamedev.place It's always good when your airplane captains started on gliders.

@jon_valdes@mastodon.gamedev.place this is called the **automation paradox**, the more automated a process is, the more experienced the human controller needs to be, who fixes it

@jon_valdes@mastodon.gamedev.place with pilots specifically, the more the automation covers edge cases, the less prepared pilots will be to handle "edgier" cases.
