It still requires a lot of skills to plan the route to avoid potentially hazardous weather conditions, where even the best automation might fail more often. Pilots of commercial flights check weather conditions regularly to adjust the plans for changing environments, and while part of planning could be automated, humans need to do fact checking, on multiple levels (all the way from different airports to air traffic control to individual pilots).
