HFS, they had approximately 30 "larger" R&D teams? I mean, I don't _use_ GitLab; it's only ever been an annoyance for me pushing back on accommodating its use by contractors who didn't understand how to use git in the first place, but I regularly find myself agog at the sheer sizes and breadths of some of these teams. It's almost like we've had middle and upper management treating engineering as a quantity problem rather than a quality problem for decades because that's how everyone is incentivized when the C-suite has contracted a summarization fetish, and they've been looking for an off-ramp that AI and some creative word salad provides. Also, that's as far as I could bear to read. I find ingesting someone else's LLM output as savory as rifling through a meth den clothes hamper.

@pikesley@mastodon.me.uk That announcement is the most excruciating example of corporate Newspeak: "rewiring internal processes", "right-size roles", "voluntary separation window", "Speed with Quality, Ownership Mindset, and Customer Outcomes", "culture of excellence". Lots of emdashes, lots of bold-faced intro sentences to long winding paragraphs. Does Bill Staples not even announce a fundamental change including potential mass layoffs in his own words?

@pikesley@mastodon.me.uk While I don't believe that 'Gitlab is about to go to shit' it'll certainly change and adapt to the times. The pure bets and observations stated in the letter are probably justified for the 10-year period given. We'll see about what happens thereafter. And we'll see about the funky side-effects within the 10-year period. In other news: Have I already recommended @forgejo@floss.social on that matter? It scales from thin-client to @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de, is probably still very organically grown, awesomely self-hostable without the epic ruby-battle that is #Gitlab and generally awesome for very many use cases. Also (not sure about the current state of the efforts there): The only SW forge that can do federation with others. Or at least was forked and built with this as a core idea. #forgejo #federation #selfhosting #selfhosted #ruby

All of that shit is band on our systems. We write 100% of our own code. Are they reading what they're writing? Point 2 says: "As the cost of producing software collapses" immediately followed by: "...the dev platform market used to be measured in tens of dollars/user/month, this year it is hundreds/user/month and headed to thousands." That is cost not collapsing.

That really does not sound good, as it can also be the lead up to a large back to offices restructuring, and hiring from more expensive cities like San Francisco in the USA. They are already offering relocation offers to employees in the wrong countries. Genuinely terrible to watch a pioneer of remote-first work go this way.

I am at my absolute limit for how much I can interact with software. Half of what I do all day is just re-login to a bazillion sites, apps & programs I need to use on the daily. My screen time is already at an unhealthy max & I'm actively trying to reduce it. If these AI-bros think we're all about to swan dive into MORE software use... I got news for them. #AI
