I shall add that what started my big-tech liberation journey was a Mastodon blog series by a lady doing a 30-day big-tech cleanse: each day, one service to ditch and alternatives. Granted, it’s taken me much longer than 30 days. I’m nearly 3 years in. Nonetheless, wherever you are, thank you for sparking the curiosity, and to this amazing community for existing. I never imagined that leaving Twitter and trying out this Mastodon thing would be such a wholesome, transformative experience.

@linguistgoneforeign@mastodon.social gotta say it: it doesn't matter that e-mail is "encrypted". SMTP (protocol used to send e-mails between servers) isn't end-to-end encrypted and companies like Proton and Tuta are doing privacy-washing IMO (in terms of e-mail at least), nothing stops them from logging messages as they come in (before they encrypt them on disk). Just don't use e-mail for anything private (or use client-side encryption like PGP). Otherwise, good job, I've gone through similar journey.

I just can't pay $149 for an OS and oh by the way I don't own it and all of your data on your machine is mine! Linux Mint is awesome, both Ubuntu and LDME versions. Email: Betterbird Browser: Waterfox or Librewolf Search: StartPage but I'm looking since I saw Ed Snowden's endorsement. Social Media: Mastodon, not perfect but hands above the rest. Much worth my time! I really do feel liberated but my eyes are always open!! Best of luck to all. I see smart choices here.
