SpaceX Is Doing Just Great https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-stock-drops-new-low-ipo-price-starship-launch-scrubbed-2026-7 > Five weeks after the company's record-breaking debut, about $1 trillion in market value has evaporated — and the selling isn't letting up. In other words, SpaceX lost one Elon of market cap. :blobcatcoffee:

German car industry warns of job collapse unless ‘bold decisions’ made to address Chinese threat https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/jul/08/german-car-industry-job-collapse-bold-decisions-address-chinese-threat German car manufacturers dragged their feet on EVs for a decade, allowing Chinese manufacturers to overtake them. They had instead focused on cheating emissions tests (remember #Dieselgate?) and on pushing back against any kind of green regulations. Same companies are now holding...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@r_alb/116878691038594948 Also, what a lot of "I have nothing to hide" people miss is that stuff-that-needs-to-be-hidden depends on social and political climate at any given moment and changes with time. Being pregnant while crossing the US border used to be a non-issue, nothing-to-hide type thing. Now US fascist lawmakers are pushing for pregnancy tests at the border. This is just a very fresh example, there are endless others. Once our data is out, we...

Hot take: I hate the fact that when using Mastodon web UI adding a personal note to a profile is now behind two additional clicks. The whole point of it for me was always that it was minimal effort to add context to some profile. No clue why this needed to be "improved" like that.

RE: https://mastodon.online/@mullvadnet/116822264297340100 This is immensely disappointing, @mullvadnet@mastodon.online. Your co-CEO is funding far-right authoritarians. Authoritarianism is not compatible with free speech – anyone who claims to be fighting for free speech has to be aware of this. In fact, the reason we need free speech is to fend of authoritarianism! You used "free speech" to defend anti-free-speech views. This is the "paradox of tolerance". Only, it is no...

Nearly a quarter of voters in Europe now back far-right parties https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jun/24/nearly-quarter-votes-europe-now-cast-far-right-parties People are angry, and they have plenty of actual real reasons to be angry. Today I learned that in @librewolf I can type "translate" in the URL bar and get to a text translation UI. This is powered by a local model and part of the Firefox translation thingy. I guess it must work the same way in Firefox? Anyway, this is great. Local model, pretty solid translations, now possible to use directly to translate copy-pasted text snippets, not just text on a website. Local models will eat Big AI's cake.
