Years ago we had a raccoon take up residence under our cement front step. We called animal removal, and we watched him trap the animal to remove it (for release elsewhere - we didn't need it dead). Watching that process has damaged my ability to enjoy wildlife. I have no need for personal contact with a fox or deer or wild cat or whatever - they're wild animals - but I love to see them from afar (or on television). But there were so many fleas hopping off that raccoon (the removal guy said he always goes home with flea bites) - now every time I see a beautiful wild creature on television or from the road, I think, "fleas".

@lmgenealogy@mstdn.ca I have a related expression I use often when enjoying the outdoors while hiking, swimming in the ocean, etc. “I like being in nature but I don’t like interacting with nature.”
