@rc2014@oldbytes.space i suspect it’s a perfect storm, the larger process fabs are seen as uneconomic, so a lot of older chips are going EOL as a result. There’s also a move away from DIP and PLCC packages towards QFP, QFN,BGA and other packages intended for machine assembly. Then there’s the DRAM is silly money, let’s cash in on SRAM too, and a minor disagreement in the Middle East causing chaos with supplies of all sorts of stuff, including raw materials used in chip production. Also, just in case you’re not aware, DIP versions of SST39SF0x0 chips are EOL, last time buy is early July.

@rc2014@oldbytes.space Buying electronics in the age of AI is like a buying steak or seafood in a fancy restaurant: menu just says "market rate".

@rc2014@oldbytes.space I had to replace a flash drive for a laptop a few months back, and ended up getting a smaller one for almost $100 instead of the $70 original. I just looked, and it was now over $300.

@rc2014@oldbytes.space it seems I've got a good deal for these two, then! 8€ each at the local electronics fair last month. There was a box full of them, I should have bought more...
