@ironicbadger@techhub.social If your storage chucks a wobbly, how easy is it to repair (but you have a backup right)? Someone like you, I'd thought, would be able to do #ZFS from scratch, thus avoiding the Unraid costs.

@ironicbadger@techhub.social it's done everything I need it to do with the haphazard set of disks I've thrown at it. All mismatched, no parity, basically acting as a VM and Container manager without the file sharing (was already doing that on my QNAP NAS), and runs pretty solidly ever since I installed RAM that doesn't make it crash every 3-5 days

@ironicbadger@techhub.social I got into a mess trying to install it on a ZimaBlade* I had to use a USB splitter for enough ports (mouse, keyboard, thumb drive) but after I installed and plugged the drive directly for headless, it wouldn't boot without the splitter - maybe just an fstab fix or something *shrug* i didn't want the headache tested it anyway and it seemed ok, felt like mergerfs with a UI I'd probably just use trueNAS if I ever escape my synology lock-in (*the ZimaBlade sucks for anything, but especially this lol)

@ironicbadger@techhub.social Been running Synology and TrueNAS for years. Ditched the former last year, switched to a pair of Ugreen 4800+ knowing I could run TrueNAS or Unraid on them. So far still using UGOS. Tried Unraid on a former PVR expecting not to like it. I do, and it's growing on me. I renewed sub. Performance and ease of use is good. Some Docker apps v easy, but I'm undecided (I also use Proxmox). Should simplify but have no compelling reasons to yet. It's worth a look. Nice community too.

@ironicbadger@techhub.social It's the primary thing that helped me get into self hosting in the first place, so I'm quite grateful for that. I probably won't stick with it forever, but it's doing a reliable job and I'm not hurrying anywhere else.

@ironicbadger@techhub.social while the open source ecosystem is far from perfect, closed/proprietary doesn't touch my hardware. Yes of course there's ugly little firmware blobs, but we don't live in the cool everything is FOSS alternative reality do we? Mentally insert a "none shall pass" Gandalf meme, so as not to waste resources.

@ironicbadger@techhub.social Been using it for a very long time and it has come a long way. It has everything I need and I've been through many hardware swaps and a number of drive failures without any issues at all. Never had a reason to look at anything else. Proxmox has a lot of hype but feels like it may be overkill for what I want. I do wish unraid had a way to do HA easily though with auto failover etc.

@ironicbadger@techhub.social overall: depends on laziness and how much a person needs UI. Personally I like vanilla Ubuntu with zfs. Add seasoning as docker on top with gitops (gitea actions to trigger deployment if docker compose file changes detect).

@ironicbadger@techhub.social I'm using unRaid for over 8 years now. It's on my main server since the beginning. It's running jellyfin, mealie, syncthing, frigate, ntfy, audiobookshelf and immich. Most of the services i discovered through the self hosted podcast, wich i really miss. The second unRaid server will be running soon at my parents house for backup purpose.
