Which kind of person is a “Baby On Board” bumper sticker supposed to change the behavior of? People aren’t thoughtfully and defensively driving 100% of the time??

    @rmondello@hachyderm.io As I understand it, it's so that emergency responders know to look for a baby if they are at a crash site. Not sure as to its efficacy.

  • @rmondello@hachyderm.io I believe it’s (originally) meant to be for rescue services in the case of an accident to know there is a child in the car that isn’t necessarily obvious because tiny.

    @rmondello@hachyderm.io It serves as a warning that the driver is the kind of person who puts a "Baby on board" sticker on their car.

    @rmondello@hachyderm.io if you're being genuine right now, I do tend to change my driving a bit if I see "student driver". Even if it's just giving a bit more space because I can tell they're nervous and going very slow. So, turns out, visual cues while driving can infact affect behavior.

    @rmondello@hachyderm.io I'm pretty sure the correct answer comes from those pointing to first-responders, but for me it translates to "the vehicles around me are the last thing I'm paying attention to." So as a motorcyclist, it's a handy warning that this one's likely to do something even more unpredictable than the rest.

    @rmondello@hachyderm.io I want to make a bumper sticker that says “No Baby on Board but please don't hit me anyways”

    @rmondello@hachyderm.io I always thought the same, until my wife pointed out to me that it's a way of letting cars around you know that your baby might do something unexpected which requires your urgent attention (choke, vomit, etc), so you might do something unexpected (suddenly stop, swerve, etc). I.e. it's not to make others drive safer, it's to warn others that you might have to unexpectedly do something. It changed how I viewed this sticker.

  • @rmondello@hachyderm.io In Spanish it's very important to be mindful of diacritics since "bebé" means baby and "bebe" means "he/she drinks" 👀

    @rmondello@hachyderm.io It isn’t a safety plea. It’s a fertility totem.

    @rmondello@hachyderm.io all I know is, I derided those signs until the day we drove home from the hospital. Then I wanted a police escort and a 100-yard clearance on all sides.

    @rmondello@hachyderm.io I saw a guy drive around a stopped car to run a red light last week …no sticker going to reach that guy.

    @rmondello@hachyderm.io It's a warning. Babies are notoriously bad drivers.
