@violetmadder @TheGreatLlama I think Canadians are often misjudged as "US-light" which significantly underestimates them. About 25 years ago I knew Canadians who were worried Canada would follow the US into US-style dystopianism. That didn't happen and I have not found Canadians who are worried about that anymore. I'm not saying these countries don't have their issues, especially around racism and colonialism, but most high quality of life countries have a citizenry with a developed sense of the US as cautionary tale, especially with regard to healthcare. That's why there has been so much money spent on preventing the US from getting healthcare. The fear among the aristocracy is that even the passive US will not give up healthcare once they have it.

  • @weyoun6 @violetmadder That's the hopeful read, rather than the pessimistic read. I hope you're right, I fear that Violet is. While we're waiting to find out, all we can do is try to push for your outcome. Either way, apparently someone in the family already chased down the documents, so I'm probably going to go ahead and pursue dual - citizenship, purely for the sake of options.

  • @weyoun6 @TheGreatLlama I work in mental health care. I just watched preventative care get tossed out the fucking window this year. Partially due to the orange man's evil bill, yes, but mostly? Because of the despicable smarmy jerk that you're probably going to be howling at me to vote for in 2028. Even the much admired social democracies of Europe have financial garrotes tightening on them, and people are going to have to fight like hell-- much, much harder than they are now-- everywhere to keep any piece of their social safety nets, much less win any real improvements.
