@Pepijn I don't believe I've been to any, I don't know of anyone in the UK who visited the Palace of Westminster for a school trip, but maybe it was more of a thing down south

@Pepijn - I am perhaps not a representative datum. I'm American, and I live near DC, so visiting the Capitol is a pretty standard school day trip.

@Pepijn Likely only Christianborg in Copenhagen, and only because I lived there and basically only the tower because it had a nice view and is free to go up in 😅 I don’t remember visiting parliaments when touristing in capitals (or I might have forgotten), and I never saw the one in France even from the outside (having been in the capital only twice 😂). To be clear, I’m interested in what happens in there, just not particularly the places themselves!

@Pepijn I count 1e/2e Kamer as one, and definitely been to Westminster. Bundestag not sure - but I’ve been to the NRW one in Düsseldorf and the Hessen one in Wiesbaden for sure, and also the European Parliament in Strassburg. Seen lots of others from the outside but didn’t go in. I did visit the not-building place of the Landsgemeinde Appenzell-Innerrhoden, though again it isn’t national.

@Pepijn I just realized that I have never been in the US Capitol despite only living 30 miles away (about 48 km). The closest I’ve been in another country is the exterior of the UK parliament. And only one state legislative building, the Maryland State House.

@Pepijn I think the only one I've been inside was the Scottish Parliament; my own one (Westminster) I've been outside but not inside. Similarly I've stood outside the Reichstag but don't remember going inside (I was quite young). So I guess it depends what counts as a visit! I liked the Scottish Parliament a lot, it's a really interesting building.

@Pepijn Hmm, yeah, my home country, sure, that's easy. But I've also been to quite a couple of other countries, often the capitals, often on sight-seeing. I guess I *must* have been at least close to another parliament building once. But I can't remember a specific instance or going inside. So voting 1.

@Pepijn I have been to the D parliament but not the DK. For “the big” school trip we went to Aarhus and tivioli friheden instead. In the 80ish it might be similar vibes?

@Pepijn I visited the French Assemblée Nationale for a school trip when I was 16. Visited the Bundestag the summer I did an internship in Berlin (but didn’t do the full tour you got) Went in the courtyard of the Binnenhof (not sure if that counts) And of course did the full EUP thing as I studied in Strasbourg, but apparently that “doesn’t count”.

@Pepijn Are you counting Scotland (and Wales and Northern Ireland) as their own nations in this context? Because Scotland can pass some of their (our) own laws, but Westminster has a degree of veto power. (To be clear, I *would* count it, but I want to make sure I give you as accurate data as possible!)

@Pepijn I’ve been to the EU parliament in Brussels and both the 1e and 2e Kamer in the Netherlands now that they are in separate buildings in Den Haag, but no, not really into visiting parliaments I guess.

@Pepijn I think I've been inside the French parliament but it wasn't a visit, I only went to a small hearing (not in the main room). Does that count? I also visited the European Parliament but I understand it doesn't count.

@Pepijn never been inside the British houses, despite being from there, although London is a long waybfrom Liverpool. I have however been inside the Danish ones with my language school during my 3 free years of Danish language courses.

@Pepijn I'm counting as "being inside it", rather than looking at it from the outside. From North Wales, both the Senedd (Wales) and Palace of Westminster (UK) are a bugger to get too for me/school trips.

@Pepijn I don't think it's possible everywhere to visit national Parliaments. Unless a regular citizen is specifically invited for a hearing a lot of countries don't allow visitors due to security concerns. Italy and France are amon those. When I lived in Berlin I was very surprised to learn that visitors could walk inside the Bundestag. So I guess I will have to answer 0.

@Pepijn I've counted the current Parliament House and Old Parliament House in Canberra, Australia. They're about half a kilometre apart, with the old one now set up as a museum. It wasn't as part of a school trip, since it's a 4 hour flight from home. I've visited Washington DC, but I didn't visit the Capitol building. I saw the outside of the White House, but it wasn't clear how to book a tour as a non-resident.

@Pepijn I’ve walked past the UK parliament often, but never gone inside. My son had a school trip there recently but it was just the students studying Politics who went (and were just an hour from London)

@Pepijn@mastodon.online At least 12 for me, many more if counting state/provincial level or intergovernmental seats (EU, UN) as well. A travel rule of thumb for me is that if I’m in a capital, I’ll see if there’s a tour available or at least grounds open to the public. Ironically I haven’t toured the U.S. Capitol because I was too busy with a protest the one time I visited my nation’s capital!
