You know what I want from AI models? I want small useful things. If I have never on my phone created a calendar event between midnight and 5 AM, and I tried to schedule some thing at 3 AM (instead of PM), I would love if my phone went "hey, you sure?" Even keyboard prediction could be a tiny bit better. If a person has been typing about, let's say "Siouxsie and the Banshees" over and over for almost two years, maybe suggest "and" or "Sioux" as the next word ONCE!?

@Verso@mastodon.social we wanted a more well designed world, what they gave us is God of the Space Mind in 1984

@Verso@mastodon.social switch to Android. If you misspell something once, you get to see it in your autocomplete choices until you factory reset the dang thing. eg. I start typing "TAC" and my second choice is "tacooooooooooos"

@Verso@mastodon.social @FinalGirl@blackqueer.life if I type anything that isn't a valid word but contains an n in a spot where a space makes sense, it should know what I meant

@Verso@mastodon.social @astraluma@tacobelllabs.net and, shockingly, a lot of small useful things are… already present! my favorite example are the little teeny tiny (O(KB)) text classifiers that run on an Android phone (I believe iOS has this too) which take in a bit of text and classify it for some purpose, like turning dialable phone numbers into links, or showing you an appropriate context menu for something you've highlighted https://source.android.com/docs/core/display/textclassifier or perhaps the models that help give you a camera that mostly Just Works™ without pissing around with focus and exposure and all the rest when shooting in Auto mode

@Verso@mastodon.social One thing I wish they would do is have dictionaries with special vocabulary that you could install and have a whole genre added to your phone in one step. It would be really cool if AI were smart enough to recognize and install them automatically, but at least let me install the whole Pokedex at once rather than forcing me to teach autocorrect the names of all 1000+ Pokemon individually.

  • @Verso@mastodon.social Every night we have family dinner I ask the nearby Alexa device to "play KDFC", San Francisco's NPR classical music station. We have done this almost every evening since owning an Alexa device, so about 10 years. The device gets it wrong about 30% of the time and we have to correct it. 10 years of this !!
