@dpiponi@mathstodon.xyz wow. I remember reading an article a few years ago that said the sub 2h marathon was probably 20-30 years away.

@dpiponi@mathstodon.xyz I wonder if one of either Sawe or Kejelcha were absent, whether either of them would've broken 2 hours. It's amazing how runners can push each other beyond their, or indeed any established envelope, in races like this.

@dpiponi@mathstodon.xyz $Diety, it takes me the better part of 2 hours to finish a 10k. That's amazing!

@dpiponi@mathstodon.xyz There has been a big uptick in both peak running and cycling performance in recent years, and both sports credit this to consumer-dazzling factors like equipment (aero bikes, magic shoes) and nutrition (top cyclists now train to take on 120g of carbs per hour). I'm suspicious, though, as there is a long history of doping in these sports, and the recently developed practice of carbon monoxide inhalation is likely to be a big factor IMO, potentially in combination with new pharmaceutical performance enhancers. I would love to be wrong about this, though. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/article/2024/aug/25/road-cycling-carbon-monoxide-rebreathing-tour-de-france-vuelta-espana-performance-abuse
