@andrewg@mastodon.ie I guess I don't engage with fedi as "a map of the real world" but as complimentary and enmeshed with it. I used to have a lot of connections on Twitter to python community buddies and some are also around here. I guess I endorse the fragmentation instead of fighting it? Twitter also never was a map of reality, and many friends of mine were not there. Loosing connections and even friends, or at least the intimacy once felt, happens over time, doesn't matter which medium...

@andrewg@mastodon.ie it's annoying cus even if you stay on the big socials the platforms don't actually want to show you the people you care you about. I dusted off my FB during the first COVID lockdown hoping to connect and I might as well not have bothered. I do like having and hearing lots of new news when I meet people in person though.

@andrewg@mastodon.ie — I have long believed social media is simply not good for me (or, I believe, a significant majority of the users). But it's also close to the only game in town when it comes to talking to people socially and outside of professional contexts. I miss the '90s, when I had long email conversations with friends. For whatever it's worth, we don't know each other particularly well, but I'm grateful for this social connection.
