A question for any non-Aussies reading this: How many Australian cities can you name off the top of your head, and which ones? What do you know about them? #askFedi #Fediverse #questions #Australia #travel

@aj@gts.sadauskas.id.au 4: Canberra, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney. Perth is on the West coast, the others on the East. Musician Pogo is from Perth. Sydney has the opera house and the bridge with the fireworks we usually see on New Years eve on TV.

@aj I'm going to make an absolute fool of myself and probably confuse cities and (territories? States? Regions?) plus throw in stuff that isn't even in Australia, but here goes: Sydney Melbourne Victoria Canberra?

@aj Sydney - opera house, not the capital Canberra - the actual capital Melbourne - Dame Edna Everidge, I think Neighbours was set here? Alice Springs - the one that's not on the coast ... yeah that's it

@aj The Alice would be my favourite after Sydney. Didn't take much to Perth - car dependent desert[#] - or Melbourne - get run over by a tram and/or fall in the Yarra and what else is there to do? [#] OK, OK, we did find interesting things to do Perth. Like, I rented a plane from Jandakot and flew it to Rotto.

@aj 4. Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Canberra, Dolphin Spit. I've seen photos of the Sydney Opera House. Dolphin Spit is where Muriel developed her love for ABBA.

@aj Sydney. Feels like a cultural capital of some sort. Shiny and glass and has that opera house on the waterfront Isn't there a Victoria? New South Wales isn't a city, neither is Tasmania, but they are places, I think they have beaches? My brain wants me to say Aukland but I'm pretty sure that's in New Zealand. And I know there's the one city that the wooden streetcars come from but I can't remember what it's called.

@aj Ok... without looking... Melbourne. Miss Fisher Mysteries, and also Fisk, and also I think maybe that show where Xena is a private detective (before moving home to NZ). Sydney. It has an opera house. Perth. It is, somehow, on the most opposite side of the world from _most_ cities. Adelaide. Penguins? Uh, Brisbane. I don't know anything about that one. Canberra? Is that a thing? Unsure on number of Rs. Also, I think maybe there is a Darwin, but I'm sorry if that's in New Zealand.

@aj Canberra - ANUni, roundabouts, world's most boring parliament building. Sydney - beaches, harbour, bridge. Melbourne - perpetual winner of the most liveable city list.

@aj Sydney: Opera House, harbour beach, long drive to work, v.expensive property prices. Might be congenial to lovers of California. Much sipping of chardonnay. Canberra: Significant in history of planned cities, capital city, politicos, civil servants, possible focus of hatred for right wing Australians. Melbourne. More old school than Sydney. Famous department store (does it still exist?) with vacuum tube communication. Adelaide: Pretty city centre, arty, site of recent literary festival controversy. Home of (in)famous Kpop commentator Kpopalypse. Brisbane: Suspect it might stand to Queensland as Austin does to Texas. Is it overrun by cane toads? Perth: Absolutely nothing like the Scottish city of the same name. Hobart: Although I enjoy sunshine, I suspect that bthe climate here might be better for this Brit than that in lots of other Australian cities. Launceston: lots of good Asian cuisine. Sorry if my off the top of the head ideas are silly, out of date, or just plain wrong!

@aj So I'm an USAian who has never been to the Southern Hemisphere. Sidney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Darwin, Adelaide. Brisbane and Darwin are warm. Brisbane is near the Great Barrier Reef. Sidney: Big city. Opera house, Olympics, and stuff. Melbourne: i have some colleagues who live there. Really dry most of the year. Cool rivers nearby (I'm a stream ecologist) Adelaide is on the flying doctors show.
