Where would I go if I wanted reliable CI for my Python software project? Running tests, linting checks, docs checks, translation checks and so on. Does not need to produce build artifacts (though seeing console output of the process would be nice for debugging reasons). With GitHub Workflows approaching Travis-levels of reliability, I'm at "some 9s would be nice"

I've already moved my issue tracking off GitHub (only keeping issues there open because it's the easiest place for people to report problems), because the overall GitHub UI has been in steady decline for the past five years or more. I don't mind the Dependabot ecosystem (but I can write update checks of my own). The other big part of GitHub that is hard to leave behind is the Security Advisory process (getting a CVE is just so much easier there), but that's fine.

@rixx SourceHut's build service is fast and I never had problems with reliability. It also allows you to SSH into the environment after a failed job (absolute killer feature if you ask me). It can be triggered from projects hosted somewhere else by submitting a YAML job description via an HTTP API. It's a paid feature though. https://man.sr.ht/builds.sr.ht/

  • @rixx I've switched over to self-hosted Forgejo runners (just plain runner on a VPS) https://forgejo.org/docs/latest/admin/actions/. They can be added to self hosted Forgejos (Forgeji?) or Codeberg repositories for CI https://docs.codeberg.org/ci/actions/

@rixx Why not codeberg - ie self hosted forgejo with self hosted runners?

@rixx did you take a look on GitLab (as in gitlab.com)? I think they do CI/CD pretty good. You get 400 CI minutes per month in the free tier an you can buy 1000 minutes for 10$. You could also easily attach your own runners if you ever want to switch. I also think that you can apply for more minutes if the project is FOSS

  • @rixx do not use #Codeberg, while I'm incredibly happy with their (free) runners the availability is so-and-so. I found self-hosting #Forgejo runner to be my easiest alternative but I totally get not wanting to deal with it.

@rixx we offer two CI systems (Crow CI and Forgejo Actions) which run on bare metal hosts, including a Mac Mini for arm64 builds.

@rixx I’ve stared at the idea of self-hosting build bot for a while but I continue to struggle to figure out how to actually put it all together

@rixx we use Circle CI and it pretty much just works and shows full outputs.

@rixx I still use CircleCI for my Python OSS (it’s where I landed after Travis went downhill). That said, I’m only using it periodically so can’t say what their actual uptime feels like!
