@bimmer@beige.party If I were to design and AI system that built houses I think I'd go for the giant 3d printer variety. Maybe that will be the singularity that destroys us all. Just walls everywhere with people and animals inside all individually panicking alone. The edgewall cries out in terror like a howl that carries for miles. The rest is silent and at peace. So pretty much a metaphor for normal life.

@bimmer TBF, two of my relatives did this out of their own brains, one in the 50s and one in the 80s. I assume the people who currently live in those houses wake up and curse my entire lineage every day.

@bimmer It's like pottery. Potters in ancient times had to make their own clay. They had to find clay deposits, sift out all the stuff from it, and turn it into blocks. Now you can just go to Michael's and buy the shit in bulk, plop it on your wheel and off to the races. But a block of clay is not a pot. You have to know how to use the clay to make a pot. Just because all the scaffolding for a pot is there, doesn't mean it's a pot.

@bimmer In the peak of the 80s building boom I walked into a model house with a two inch crack in the living room roof. When I pointed it out to the people showing the house, they just kind of shrugged. We immediately walked out of course, but I'm sure someone bought those homes...

@bimmer@beige.party someone gave a presentation today about how stupid estimating software projects is and it had a similar vibe. Like in no other industry would it be ok to give your manager a "gut feel" that then becomes a deadline for the project. That would be insane in any other industry...

@bimmer Alternate version: the exterior of the house looks ok, but that's only the surface decor. Everything solid in the house is particle board. Window frames? Particle board. Ductwork? Particle board. Load-bearing walls? Extra-thick particle board. Electrical wiring? Ok, they actually kind of listened to the one stodgy old structural engineer who advised them to "not roll their own electrical", but everything that's not a wire or otherwise conductive is particle board. The developer-approved response to something going wrong in a room in your new house is to extrude an entire new room for you out of particle board (after first making sure there are enough Particle Board Tokens in your account to do the whole room before you start). Using conventional tools like hammers, drills, and actual structural materials is old school, a sign you are stuck in the past, and must be shunned.
