@iFixit Hard to pick one out of these, but the soldered memory is a big f u to a customer, because that narrows many people out of tinkering.

@iFixit Soldered. Glue is also annoying since you need solvents but soldered makes impossible to repair unless you have godly microsoldering skills.

@iFixit soldered RAM ―as in the Dell Inspirons sold to millions of USA K-to-PhD students― are, hands down the worst. we can add external storage drives. there is no such thing for RAM. honestly, it should be a crime punishable by a 10% of the total gross worth of a company.

@iFixit i had to repair my friend's motorola edge 50 fusion and had to replace a broken screen. Those shenanigans glued the battery and put the display flex cable underneath it, and it's so frustrating. My relative's redmi note 12s gonna need a battery replacement, and it's already complicated to replace it since the back cover needs to be unglued from the frame, but well atleast Xiaomi has a strip to remove the battery gracefully. Disgusting!

@iFixit The soldered SMD parts exclude everyone without really expensive equipment, even small repair shops and volunteer repair cafés cannot afford them. Next is the glue Hidden screws I find with #ifixit help. First wanted to write "your", but as an active contributor I could also say "our".

@iFixit "Security" screws. They could have been slot-head, cross-head, or hexagon-head, but manufacturer decided to be cute and make something proprietary that is probably just "use a precision flathead very carefully" to remove.

@iFixit Hidden screws are annoying, but if there are guides, that's something you can deal with. Glue can be dissolved with some alcohol, and you can get it at most pharmacies. Soldered chips requires specialized equipment and training to repair, which means you can't expect the average person to just follow a guide. I'd say soldered down components is the biggest obstacle for home repairs. I have the equipment and skill to repair these, but even I get annoyed when I have to spend quite a bit of time to upgrade the SSD when M.2 can be upgraded in seconds and doesn't take much space anyway (Apple is especially bad with this, and use it to overcharge their customers), soldered RAM is more common for laptops, but with LPCAMM2, there's no excuse to solder RAM on the board when you're trying to hit the highest performance.

@iFixit but if I had to pick.. adhesive.. I've had the worst time replacing some LCDs on recent HP laptops that are tacked onto the lid with super strong sticky tape.. pretty much have to destroy it to get it off

@iFixit The "warrant void" sticker doesn't bother me; companies typically make it very difficult to have repair done under warranty so I prefer to fix it myself. Of the rest, glued parts is the most annoying.

@iFixit one thing to note, Warranty Void stickers aren't illegal, which is actually worse. The way it works is: if you break a warranty void sticker, then try and claim warranty, then are denied, you will at that time be able to sue the company for breach of contract (which they can and will use every tool at their disposal to fight, costing a ton of money they know you don't have) and they will not be allowed to use the breached sticker as reasoning in court.

@iFixit Gotta be the non modular parts. The other three are easy enough to overcome with the right simple tools or knowledge. But getting around non modular parts is going to take some serious microsoldering skills.

@iFixit I can justify several of these in the name of making the product smaller, lighter, or more elegant (at the expense of repairability). But there’s no reason for stickers, especially if they’re lying or illegal.

My own mild annoyance about a few of the devices I've taken apart — plastic cases are quite often held together with tiny clips in addition to screws. I don't know why they do it, but those are a pain in the ass to undo and very easy to break, even if you use the right tool.

@iFixit Ich habe schon viele Geräte geöffnet und nach Möglichkeit repariert. Das größte Problem stellen Verklebungen dar! Siegel zeigen einem den Weg😉 Versteckte Schrauben sind zwar lästig aber mit etwas Gefühl und Erfahrung erkennt man sie - Problem gelöst. Viel problematischer sind die Gehäuse mit Plastiknasen! Wie rum arbeiten sie, wo muss man drücken, wo ziehen... Irgendeine Komplexität muss die Platine haben, finde ich OK. Aber alles voll von Mikrocontroller und die brauchen Software!!
