  Okay. So question for #linux or #security folks. I want to set up a #nixbook (#nixos) computer set up as a public access computer. I know how to harden the OS to avoid tampering. But how can I filter content? I'm already getting questions like, how can we prevent people from looking up inappropriate things? How would you do it?

  I previously posted a rant about how #apple has "accidentally" killed the on-boarding of a freshly installed Catalina on a 2019 MacBook Air. The Apple fans rushed to say "well its a 7 year old OS, what do you expect?"   Hey #lenovo , can you stop this crap? I have a #thinkpad x13s that apparently needs a SPECIAL version of #windows11 that only YOU have. And when I go to get it, not only do i have to register, provide a serial number and deal with captca.. but then you give me an EXE to create the media??!?! I have a machine that can't boot windows so you give me a windows executable? Why not just a damn ISO? I wish #linux would boot on this thing

  I'm laughing that the inside of an M3 MacBook Pro looks like a redacted document.. Kinda fitting seeing how much #apple hates #rightToRepair Nothing serviceable, worst ribbon cable connectors ever made, custom size and pattern screws. This is not the future I want.

  Ok #webDev peeps. I'm so curious your advice here. What do you use these days to build and manage a simple marketing website that someone non technical could log in and update? I have a site built in #tailwind and #php and its great, but there is no CMS behind it. #wordpress seems like crazy overkill. Is there a new open source minimalist CMS out there that people use? What's the new hottness?

  Another reason to hate #Apple We're seeing more 2018+ MacBook Pro/Air donations — but Apple's T2 chip means even after iCloud sign-out and reset, the firmware stays locked to the original account. Without donor contact, these machines are useless. :( I've upcycled ~1,000 older Macs, but T2 era machines will end that. It's controlling, creates e-waste, and will only get worse. #righttorepair matters — Apple couldn't care less.

  Man if this isn't peak 2008! "Media center PC with a DVD drive and Beats Speakers". Ohhh and of course Norton and some gimmicky cooling trick. It will, however, run #nixbook perfectly fine. Thanks to #linux, legends like this can live on!

  While I'm leaning #elixir , i'm also taking the opportunity to learn and try the #zed editor as well. I'm usually a #helixEditor guy.. but in learning a new framework, I really want to see the file tree. I've been zed-curious for a while and I have to say, I like it. It's super clean, fast and simple, while seemingly having everything I need! Also runs great in #nixos #linux

  WOW. Just a huge shout out to A+ Computers Olympia who donated a MASSIVE amount of "older" Chromebooks to the Computer Upcycle Project. I'll be going through these, cleaning and upgrading what can be done and then working on getting them into the hands of people who need them. This might look like a crazy amount of laptops, but honestly, its the tip of the iceburg of machines that get thrown away... ever... single... day...

  For many people, the #Linux vs #Windows vs #Mac debate is a privilege — it assumes you can choose. But working with the Computer Upcycle Project, I've seen the real choice is often Linux vs no computer at all. ~95% of donated computers are "too old" for Windows 11 or macOS. Linux installs on them anyway, adding 10+ years of life to machines #Microsoft and #Apple called trash. This isn't Linux vs Windows. It's Linux vs e-waste.

  Tonight on the #nixbook workbench.. a 2015 Era #macbookPro that had a bad SSD (which I had a spare and replaced then installed Nixbook) And then an older Lenovo Yoga that had a cracked screen registering a constant phantom touch, making the computer unusable. I simply disconnected the "touch" data lines to the motherboard and now it functions as a non touch laptop. These will both go to people in need for free. Love to #linux and #nixos for always making this possible!
