it was understood that there was a need for educational material and so you'd get lots of people writing books about how to use your new computer, or how to use the internet, or whatever and people weren't afraid to admit they didnt know anything b/c it was clearly new and weird

    @beka_valentine@kolektiva.social sometimes I wonder if things work too well now, or other things are too easy. Back in Windows 95/98 times, I could click around and discover stuff for myself, but sometimes stuff didn't work right, so I'd have to mess around with device manager and IRQs or wipe and reinstall the whole thing. When I got on the internet - to "post" anywhere meant understanding newsgroups, or building your own website (your ISP even gave you some hosted space and a little how-to). Trial by fire?

  • i think computers specifically have a bit of a nuanced path to their current knowledge void tho i think a few things happened simultaneously that created that problem. other things are probably connected to it broadly but computers specifically have a particular set of reasons
