@autistics But I'm now in a position where the difference between the fully-rested most resilient version of myself and a totally burned-out nonfunctional version of myself is just a hair's breadth. I can't work in this state. I don't think I can ever get back to 100% but I need somebody who understands to tell me if it's possible for me to get back to 30 or 40% and, if so, how I start to do that. So if anyone can recommend who I should talk to I'd appreciate it. Thanks /end

@Psychonaut @autistics your struggle is my struggle comrade. eerily similar, in fact. if you were in the states, i'd point you at my therapist. she *might* do transatlantic telehealth, but the timing could be a challenge. in the meantime, i'd suggest finding a counselor that is not only familar with neurodivergence but also specializes is addiction recovery. there seems to be a lot of crossover between that and the late-diagnosis community that gives the therapist certain insights into both issues. another treatment that i've found etremely helpful is neurofeedback. it's kinda wild, but has gotten me to a very 'stable' place. peace and health upon you, fellow human.

@Psychonaut @autistics I can't offer much advice, because I'm navigating something similar - I'm mid burnout myself, probably not the first time, but certainly the most severe: brain fog, loss of function, memory/recall problems, panic when confronted by cognitive load, dissociation/laggy feeling, lack of motivation, sleepiness AND sleeplessness, increased sensory sensitivities... What I THINK has helped has been: The lovely people on the Mastodon #ActuallyAutistic hash tag and @Autistics group; walking, particularly in the countryside; where possible, staying away from: social situations, big supermarkets, shopping centres, and any other sources of stress/sensory overload; avoiding stressful/high concentration tasks; Fidget toys; This article was particularly informative for me, explaining why "little things" kept knocking me back to square one. Spoiler: it's all snakes and no ladders. https://www.dralicenicholls.com/step-by-step-recovery-from-autistic-burnout-what-you-need-at-every-stage/ Working through a Burnout workbook, and trying to follow the advice therein (lots of things earlier in this list) but specifically learning about how things like alexithymia, interoception, sensory sensitivities, stress etc. feed into the burnout cycle. The Neurodivergence Skills Workbook for Autism and ADHD by Jennifer Kemp and Monique Mitchelson. Good luck. It's a heck of a journey, but I believe we can all improve our situation. The more you understand about yourself (and your own unique profile) the better you can know what will help.

@Psychonaut @autistics Unfortunately my understanding is that genuine help with something like this is extremely rare and more than a post code lottery, especially as it relies on therapists having a level of knowledge, experience and expertise that is even rarer. Even if you have pockets deep enough to go private. Recovering from burnout, especially later in life, when time is already doing a number on our resilience, energy levels and ability to bounce back from things, is not easy and requires a lot of time and patience. I am finding that self-care is the key. Finding out, from the community as much as anything, how to look after your needs, especially sensory and energy levels. The routines of sleep and living that drain you the least and recharge you the most. Even if they are far from what you might consider normal. But then it was the very fact that we are different and have different requirements and being ignorant, or ignoring that, to try and always push through regardless, which was one of the many causes for us to spend our lives repeating the endless cycle of burning out and recovering incompletely. Good luck and I hope you can find what you need.
