we really had a thing going for a while there. Glorious years with some amazing community and conferences that centered our human relationships to one another and how they could be better. And all it took to kill it all was a lying machine that sucks your metaphorical ego-dick and spits out worse code than someone who just graduated college.

Fascists are taking over everything, everyone and everything is under threat, and we need allies. And yet, everyone gives up not even out of motivated self-interest, but over the mere suggestion that they in the future *may* profit.

@zkat every time i see someone taking a principled, reasonable stance i feel proud of them / proud to know them in the cases where i do. resistance is happening, the situation is precarious and ever-changing. the day to day is certainly frustrating though, and the broader picture, when i step back and think of it, is so heartbreaking - many lost relationships and institutions that probably aren't coming back.

@zkat@toot.cat I think people like this need to take a step back. If you're erasing your friend groups and isolating yourself over LLM use, you really should take a step back. Step back and ask yourself, "Do I have a cushy job that isn't destroying my body? Do I have enough money to make sure I'm relatively comfortable? When I talk about 'respect for the environment', did I care about data centers when Google and Amazon started building them a decade ago?" And so on and so forth. There are valid criticisms on AI, but I also think the black and white ultra-focused all-or-nothing view is of a position that ignores material conditions of the people you're talking about, and only because, some people are trying to, or genuinely believe, that AI can be used to uplift them from constant poverty. Something that I personally know quite a few people on the Fediverse don’t understand or can’t empathize with, because a lot of people on fedi are cushy office job workers.

I'm not as radical as to outright unfollow or even block people who brag about their use of LLMs, but I do ridicule them sometimes. Their arguments to get me to please try inserting an LLM into your already perfectly fine workflow anyhow, somehow, but you gotta try it are also very funny non-problems I've never had in the first place. Writing code faster? Seriously? Like, do you really think my bottleneck is my typing speed? Easier refactors? In what universe is describing a refactor in vague English easier than selecting a menu item in an IDE?

@zkat I’ve said for years that the advent of Trumpism had only one (very small) positive: it encouraged lots of seemingly-caring people to reveal what they actually thought about immigrants / gays / trans folk / etc so we wouldn’t have to work so hard to suss out their real personalities. Apparently AI is providing a similar “service.”
