@zkat@toot.cat I think people like this need to take a step back. If you're erasing your friend groups and isolating yourself over LLM use, you really should take a step back. Step back and ask yourself, "Do I have a cushy job that isn't destroying my body? Do I have enough money to make sure I'm relatively comfortable? When I talk about 'respect for the environment', did I care about data centers when Google and Amazon started building them a decade ago?" And so on and so forth. There are valid criticisms on AI, but I also think the black and white ultra-focused all-or-nothing view is of a position that ignores material conditions of the people you're talking about, and only because, some people are trying to, or genuinely believe, that AI can be used to uplift them from constant poverty. Something that I personally know quite a few people on the Fediverse don’t understand or can’t empathize with, because a lot of people on fedi are cushy office job workers.

@valerie @zkat there's literally no valid use case for AI. People are being shunned because of the harm AI causes, which isn't even limited to the political & environmental consequences. AI effectively gives people the same brain damage CEOs get from having their worst ideas validated. It turns people worse. There's zero excuse to allow it, & "some people fantasize about escaping poverty through it" being a valid excuse would absolve literally anything, even joining ICE/police.

@valerie @zkat I don't think anyone is talking about cutting people off because of what they're doing at work, as long as it's not outright fascist collaboration. The problem is when they bring that shit into personal or community spaces, trying to push free software projects to adopt it, trying to convince their friends to use it, taking fawningly about what they did with it, treating it like their soulmate, etc. 🤮 And almost all of them do this. Because it's a cognitohazard designed and optimized to be addictive.
