@zkat there has definitely been mourning and a fair bit of social realignment. I picked my close friends well enough that that list hasn’t changed much. The general list of folks I respect or even tolerate is way smaller though.

@zkat I suspect some folks interpret LLM-abstinence/boycott/protest as an extension of "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" , with loads of folks nodding in agreement, but far fewer actually modifying their behaviour in alignment the world is messy and complicated and it's far too easy for individual actions to have unintended negative consequences 🫂 like carbon emissions, i think we need systemic solutions here rather than "individual responsibility", e.g. procurement rules that forbid spending tax payer money on LLM-generated code the "individual responsibility" angle then sorts itself out as demand for artisanal skills and code is maintained 🤷

@zkat Big tech AI might be the closest equivalent to the One Ring we have in real life. For the big tech AI overlords it has the potential to be a surpremely powerful tool to remake the world order in their favour. For the average person it's just marginally useful and ultimately corrupting, but the thrill of power seems to be too much for many people to resist.

@zkat I'm sorry to hear that. I hope that now we know where everyone stands, those of us who are on the same wavelength can pick up the pieces and eventually get back together as a community that, though smaller, is also more wholesome
