@madduci@mastodon.social I once had a Nokia whose battery died. That's "died" as in wouldn't hold its charge for even a week any more, died after about four days. It had a replaceable battery. But original Nokia replacement batteries were no longer sold, and the only option was a no-name Chinese rip-off. Which ... guess what ... didn't hold its charge any better than the one I was replacing and died after about four days. So unless this comes with a law requiring full spec replacement batteries to be manufactured for as long as anyone wants to buy one it's likely to be of limited use. "At least five years" (from the article) looks like bollocks to me, as the original won't have died that quickly.

@madduci@mastodon.social For this to make any difference, they will need to have replaceable operating systems too. Otherwise by the time the battery conks out, your phone is likely out of support and you will have to ditch it anyway.

@madduci@mastodon.social 2027 is in 7 months, I think the best SamsungAppleEtMerda can do within this time is to put a symbolic tool which is theoretically capable of opening the phone under the full moon if it is 27 °C outside, and it is Friday. More realistically, they just pay a fine and will continue selling what they are selling

@madduci@mastodon.social This will hopefully force replaceable batteries into ALL phones sold in global markets. It is enough of a design change that running two production lines for open back and closed back phones will cost too much. For graphene users, that means being able to keep the phone until it is no longer supported instead of when the battery swells up and pops the display. If you are not an activists or a migrant and nobody you know it, you might be able to keep such a phone until the CPU dies of electromigration. The phone industry wants to you buy a new subsidized phone from a carrier loaded with spyware every year of course. Even the worst phone batteries are good for 2-3 years. Final issue will be they can refuse to sell new batteries, but it's a lot easier to solder wires to a slightly smaller battery of convenience and to the battery contacts than to get the display off, take the whole phone apart, replace the battery, and reassemble. To do a battery of convenience on many phones today requires getting a power bank, gluing it to the phone, and connecting by a short USB cable. This BTW also works for cameras and power banks are both cheaper and larger than $80 phone batteries

For over a decade I had 3 requirements when I bought a phone: - microSD card - headphone jack - replaceable battery These days I can still manage to find the first two in a mid-range android but I haven't been able to find one with a swappable battery for quite some time. #Android
