If your neighbour, without talking to you, brought over his own tools and mowed your shaggy front lawn very short, how would you feel?

@beandreams exasperated because now I have to navigate the social landscape of, they were being kind and generous but it’s shaggy for a reason (pollinators, crocus lawn, etc), and I want them to stay out but don’t want to alienate them arghh

@beandreams we actually had a neighbor once who did that, and edged the lawn for us. He was a kindly old codger who was doing his son's lawn atvthecsame, though, and we managed to talk him into not scalping either lawn.

@beandreams this exact thing happened to us a while back. The neighbour in question is a very nice guy and also very much an odd duck. He had mowed the lawn of a neighbour who had asked him to do it, and then just felt on a roll so he mowed our lawn and one or two others. Mostly i just felt perplexed.

@beandreams very depends. if i have no interaction before then this is a boundary violation worthy of a stern convo which, though i'd probably give the benefit of the doubt, would firmly state a need to be asked before any such thing occurs again. if we have interacted it would be down to how aloof / helpful they've been before to decide on next steps. but in general folks need to at least ask first before doing literally anything on someone else's property.

@beandreams this happened to us. We were leaving the grass long for the months of April and May, to help the pollinators and other insects. The "kind" neighbour cut that plan short. I was mad.

@beandreams I would feel a range of emotions about this over time. Initially, I would be exasperated and annoyed. Very sorry (if) this has happened to you.

@beandreams the way my ex used to mow the lawn, i was perfectly happy when the neighbor mowed for us.

@beandreams Confused, because my neighbours aren't shy about telling us when something is bothering them. 😂

@beandreams For a while after we moved in here, our quite elderly neighbor kept coming over and edging our lawn, until we finally worked up the nerve to ask him to stop. He did a great job, sure, but it was deeply uncomfortable, and we felt that he was doing it because he didn't like looking at our less than perfectly neat yard.

@beandreams very annoyed - long grass is better for insects/birds/wildlife and long grass is also more drought resistant

@beandreams They're not communicating enough. And if is a problem for you, they now need to know your preference or needs.

@beandreams Same question about a neighbour and a snowblower would likely get very different results 😀

  • @beandreams After spinal surgery I was unable to keep up with my yard. A Camelia tree between our properties was dropping flowers on his driveway; I agreed it was ok for him to TRIM branches overhanging his drive way. HE CUT IT DOWN TO A STUMP I wrote him a letter and left it in this book. 2 days later there was a 7' fence between us. Read that letter in the alt. You may then think the fence was not high enough.

@beandreams A shaggy lawn could be someone’s choice. It wouldn’t be the same reaction if someone shovelled your driveway though. I think that’s why some people assume they are the same thing.

@beandreams annoyed bc i like my dandelions and clover goshdarnit! but, if he was nice enough to ask first, i'd say if you wait a week to cut it, i'd be very grateful and idk give him cookies or some shit
