    @hejsna@ruby.social it’s a really easy fix, isn’t it?!

    @hejsna@ruby.social great insights. I had a sad realization: > But I really do think that being a leader and a public figure, in open source as well as in a company, comes with a price of admission: it requires some goddamn decency. Now that you say that, I think that’s precisely what Trump changed: he showed you *don’t* have to have any decency and you can get elected twice. I think he’s emboldened DHH and others.

  • @hejsna@ruby.social I’m not sure about this. I mean, yes, sure, it would’ve been nice if Dave stoped posting years ago. But it's only a part of the issue. He's still got a lot of power and his politics guides how he applies it. He’s an obviously authoritarian knob. That's why people are so ready to believe that he stands behind the rubygems/bundler takeover even if there are no evidence to back that, at best some rumours. Even if he stops posting he still can pull shit like this. Sure, day-to-day drama would be lower and it would be easier to forget for a time about him but it wouldn't make the issue go away.

    @hejsna@ruby.social "somehow, he has yet to grasp" ... "it's mind-bendingly strange how [he] doesn't get this." The answer stares us in the face: He does get it. He just doesn't care. He simply holds these beliefs and is using his power to impose them on people and accepts the costs.

    @hejsna@ruby.social I don't necessarily think not knowing about an open source maintainer's political views is some sort of grand ideal we should all strive for; software is political, after all, and open source kind of obviously so. I do, however, think that not hearing about _DHH's_ political views would be just great, especially for the Rails (and larger Ruby) community. "Having a particular political outlook" and "being an intentionally inflammatory asshole" are different things, and the slope between them isn't even all that slippery.

    @hejsna@ruby.social On point. I gave DHH the benefit of the doubt for a long time, but the last several posts on his blog are something to say the least. I wish he'd steelman the opposite side of his views as an intellectual exercise. But he seems to flourish in this right-wing nonsense unfortunately and there's no room left for intellectual curiosity.

    @hejsna@ruby.social I'm not sure why you are asking him to self-censor. he's posting on his blog? Isn't that part of free expression? I don't see why we all need to have an opinion about... his dumb opinions. Also, I don't understand why people are talking about this rather than the ruby central/ruby gems debacle. Is there some reason why it's automatically a vague conspiracy theory based on no evidence that someone's whose political options we don't like is behind this community destroying event?
