In the Future All Food Will Be Cooked in a Microwave, and if You Can’t Deal With That Then You Need to Get Out of the Kitchen https://www.colincornaby.me/2025/08/in-the-future-all-food-will-be-cooked-in-a-microwave-and-if-you-cant-deal-with-that-then-you-need-to-get-out-of-the-kitchen/?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=jetpack_social

@colincornaby Then you better own the Bible: Richard Deacon's Microwave Cookery is the holy text. Yes, that Richard Deacon... Mel Cooley from Dick Van Dyke Show fame. Now our microwave messiah - He released his bible onto the world in 1981 and if you read it, hidden amongst the recipes you find the wisdom of the ages. Hidden in his recipe for Beef and Bacon Teriyaki is the secret to all happiness.

@colincornaby But my wok won't fit in there, and I really like Chinese food. [OK, I admit I said this before reading the item, which is hilarious.]

@colincornaby This is the “modest proposal” of our times. Genius.

  • @colincornaby "And that sounds like a next quarter problem – and we don’t talk about next quarter problems." Is a perfect example of why I will never be upper management. I keep thinking about impacts in years and decades instead of months and quarters.

@colincornaby Satire is powerful tool to cut through the hype layer to the kernel of realism. We definitely need that. But the fact that CodeGen microwaves can be useful for fast-food-level code brings the question – how much of populous will move to fast food as a replacement for real food? And what effect will that have? Code-obesity? ImageGen microwaves are cutting into the livelihoods of artists. That’s real. So the remaining question is: is the complexity a wall that will be hit?

@colincornaby @wakame It'd be somewhat more likely with the weird fusion assisted-convection oven + microwave that gets sold, as that addresses a number of the total use-cases. There are many that remained unaddressed though.

@colincornaby when I moved into my first apartment after college my friends' parents' gave me a microwave they'd been given as a wedding present. It had a "turkey" button on it. I tried it once and it boiled the coating off my ceramic plates.

@colincornaby I don't want microwaved food. I want food replicators. I want us to be able to 3D print food molecules so we stop destroying the planet and ourselves.

@colincornaby unlikely. You can't have microwave ovens without a complex technological civilisation, and we're busily destroying the foundations of that.

@colincornaby I understood that this is some kind of satire, as it's talking about future 1955 and about Internet at the same time. And microwaves became a thing only around 1970. Does it stand for LLMs or something? If yes, what are they replacing (or not)?

@colincornaby reminds me of the classic "microwave cooking for one." There was definitely a time when some people thought all future cooking would happen in a microwave, just like there was a time when there were people who thought synth instruments would replace all other instruments.

@colincornaby This post feels so extremely targeted at me and my two different thrift-store-finds microwave cookbooks (a GE puff piece (tho still thorough, if rather UHWUT in one or two spots) from 1977 and an actually quality one with meaningful contributions to knowledge from 1987) in particular, I love this so much.

@colincornaby even for Satire, this wasn't a great read because it agitated over stupid shit, and ALSO bcs I didn't touch a microwave in over 2 decades. Not recommended, 1 of 5 ⭐

@colincornaby Half the time my microwave makes food that looks fine (like pizza with broccoli) but the broccoli is Lego. Not Duplo. Full tooth-shattering Technic. I then have to show the microwave my missing tooth and a dentist’s note to get a retry, which usually swaps it for cake with Play-Doh icing. After enough retries I sometimes get something edible, though it still tastes like wet cardboard.
