@dx@social.ridetrans.it Cosigning this so hard. I lose my place completely and it's among the most intrusive things people do to text.

@dx@social.ridetrans.it Even better when there is a subtle difference in the pull quote... 🤬

@isagalaev@mastodon.social 2024-11-30 04:25
@dx@social.ridetrans.it agree! On my blog I have paragraphs with an outline, a bigger font and a different color, but they are just part of the text.

@JoshuaACNewman@xeno.glyphpress.com 2024-11-30 05:07
@dx@social.ridetrans.it In my publications, I put “pull quotes” inline so you read them as you go.

@dx@social.ridetrans.it I hate these so much
-
@europlus@social.europlus.zone 2024-11-30 05:39
@dx@social.ridetrans.it @rgb@cathode.church except at abc.net.au, where you have to read them to read the whole article. Not sure which I hate more: the convention, or one worthy site going against it.

@dx@social.ridetrans.it You shall have my blade.

@sandhu@mastodon.social 2024-11-30 07:00
@dx@social.ridetrans.it I have trained myself to ignore them.

@radicalabacus@hachyderm.io 2024-11-30 07:25
@dx@social.ridetrans.it agree 100%. By the way, there is a typo near the start of the alt text. Well, not exactly a typo, looks more like a steno mis-stroke or (maybe more likely) speech to text error?
-
@trinsec@trinsec.org 2024-11-30 07:45
@dx@social.ridetrans.it Oh gods, I hate this. 😆

@dx@social.ridetrans.it joke's on you, counting the alt text I read it thrice
-
@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social 2024-11-30 09:23
@dx@social.ridetrans.it Twice?? I've seen articles that do more than that! 😂

@dx@social.ridetrans.it I concur.

@dx@social.ridetrans.it thank you for giving these horrible things a name. I hate having these things break up the text. Especially since they tend to be xits (is that what tweets are called these days?), giving away poor source selection.

@dragonarchitect@rubber.social 2024-11-30 11:11
@dx@social.ridetrans.it OH SO THAT'S WHAT THOSE THINGS ARE CALLED Yes, they're fricking insufferable because of the unnecessary repetition and redundancy. >..>

@writeblankspace@plasmatrap.com 2024-11-30 13:27
@dx@social.ridetrans.it rightt if you want to emphasize it just, idk, make the actual thing itself much bigger?
-
@jn@boopsnoot.de 2024-11-30 14:05
@dx@social.ridetrans.it i do think they can be done well (i.e. a lot unlike the example provided), but quite frequently they are exactly as terrible as the example, so i completely agree

@dx@social.ridetrans.it Well said! But, has #AutoCarrot attacked your alt-text, or is that a joke I don't get?

@wikkit@mastodon.social 2024-11-30 15:21
@dx@social.ridetrans.it It’s also annoying when they clip ten seconds of a video and play it at the beginning, when it’s going to happen a minute into the video. That annoying behavior with pull quotes isn’t just limited to articles, where it is certainly a scourge. I’ve seen the video editing equivalent as well. Sometimes just a snippet, but it’s also annoying when they clip ten seconds of a video and play it at the beginning, when it’s going to happen a minute into the video.

@bernicecbc@newsie.social 2024-11-30 15:30
@dx@social.ridetrans.it I can totally see this. I rarely use them in my own writing now.
-
@kev@mcr.wtf 2024-11-30 15:58
@dx@social.ridetrans.it as an ex-subeditor, they're only there to make the text fit the box you want it to. They don't actually have any relevance.
-
@peterbrown@mastodon.scot 2024-11-30 16:38
@dx@social.ridetrans.it I often do it when putting up a link. Rather than paraphrase what they say I take a direct quote from the piece and put it in quotation marks. Generally they express it much better than I could - it’s a compliment.

@timelordiroh@mstdn.iroh.tv 2024-11-30 16:39
@dx@social.ridetrans.it I will stand on the hill with you.

@dx@social.ridetrans.it Couldn't agree more, they completely ruin the reading order.

-
@RoseRaven@eldritch.cafe 2024-11-30 22:13
@dx@social.ridetrans.it I understand your hill and will plant flowers in memory but I like pull quotes. They provide tone emphasis imo.
-
@ColesStreetPothole@weatherishappening.network 2024-12-01 14:58
@dx@social.ridetrans.it Pull quotes were invented by comms/marketing departments. Most people in comms/marketing departments don't want to read the whole thing.
-
@jasper@mastodon.nl 2024-12-01 18:10
@dx@social.ridetrans.it read something twice for emphasis. Edit: yeah it's basically never emphasis that's worth it...
-
@polygonien@rollenspiel.social 2024-12-08 18:01
@dx@social.ridetrans.it I almost thought I was the only one who felt that they are kinda pointless and annoying 😅
