  Here's a couple thought experiments: Would you allow an AI company to make a model trained off your open source licensed work, if the model was guaranteed to be open weights under an MIT-like license, and the training dataset was public? They're _useful_ but when they're _right_ that's either a function of guardrails and checks that've put in place, or an accident. Usually it's an accident. Plan accordingly.

  Be careful. "It's AI slop" is turning into a thought-terminating cliche. Even though it's true often, the actual use of the phrase is starting to be a shortcut to dismissing things without using our brains. And that is itself a kind of slop. Learn to notice it because doing it consciously is exhausting, but knowing when you're being cognitively lazy is a step to being a bit more resistant to bad ideas and being manipulated.

  I knew it was this way but it's really hitting me today how much the Open Source movement and copyright maximalism supplanted the idea of free software, and again how much the Free Software movement turned from a close ideological cousin of the remix and open culture movement into a culture of legalism. At the same time, copyright law itself has been extended to be near-immortal copyrights rather than brief monopolies to spur creation by enabling profit from creating works.
