Buses are such interesting little worlds. I’ve taken transit all my life. I’ve made “bus friends” and had a little community as a part of my morning commute. I’ve had amusing conversations with drunks. I’ve seen fights and creeps and smelled awful things. I’ve taken candy from an old man and chatted with an old lady who was crying. And I’ve shut myself out and listened to my headphones. I think we would all do well to take the bus more often. #transit #community #bus

This thought came about after I saw a young lady ask a stranger across the aisle for help opening up a container. There was just something so simple and lovely about that interaction.

@EmpyClaw getting lost and learning the city via transit routes hit the same part of the brain for me as exploring a metroidvania game

@EmpyClaw Taking a bus (any sort of public transportation) requires an ability to largely cede control of your autonomy for a while, an attribute anathema to a significant majority of USians. I wonder if the politics of bus riders tilts heavily left compared to those who insist on driving despite availability of an alternative. It’s not available everywhere, ofc, and bikers would skew results if tested, but they’re used to that.

@EmpyClaw ahhh I have some good stories from BART heh... There was the guy happily and animatedly proclaiming his love for "broccoli with melted cheese"... The time I unadvisably lent my phone to a woman who proceeded to have a loud relationship disagreement... And then of course the time I encountered Genghis Musk-Ox... Mostly, it was mundane and involved a lot of podcasts. But every once in a while there'd be a very memorable situation!

  • @EmpyClaw Riding the bus these last few months some interesting benefits. It’s forced me to into close contact with those of lower income and the disabled. That’s a good thing. Also I have to operate on the buses schedule not mine. It takes planning. I realized that I have 20 minutes to grocery shop or I’ll miss the return bus. What surprised me was that the total time shopping was 8 minutes
