Any Ukrainian speakers out there can lend a hand with some vocabulary? I’m writing a piece of fantasy fiction in a setting inspired by Ukraine. In it, a character calls out to elemental spirits commanding them to rest, speaking Ukrainian to do so. Just, “Rest.” Finding a word for rest has turned up a lot of options from casual to funerary. Curious to hear from speakers what comes to mind in this context. Thanks to anyone who has insights. #ukraine #ukrainian #language #fantasy

#Today will be pretty toasty but not as bad as last weekend. 30°C (86°F) although the humidity will make that much more unpleasant 😅 I was up a little early so I took an extra-long bike ride to start the day so I can get to AC on the way home as soon as possible. Beautiful morning! Great way to start the day. Have a lovely Friday, internet. Wishing you joy. #saskatoon #yxe #saskatchewan #BikeTooter

Full day #today Got through three chapters of edits. My words cut now exceeds 2000 across the pass! Took a longer bike ride and saw pelicans. 😊 I’ve got a photo but it’s not great. I ran into someone I worked with nearly 20 years ago. Caught up with her briefly and it was so lovely to hear about where she’s gone and what she’s done. I’m happy for her and delighted that we crossed paths. Now I should probably sleep. Past my bedtime 😅 #writing #birds #3goodthings

I reiterate, why do I live in a place that can go from -40 to +40? No one should have to live with a variance of 80°C 🫠🥵☀️

The forecast has calmed down a bit going from 42°C (108°F) to a mere 38°C (100°F) with the humidity. Why do I live in a place that can go from -40 to +40? Regardless, we decided to stay in from the Sidewalk Sale. Hauling out Audra’s stuff and seven hours in the heat doesn’t seem great when she has an air conditioned studio two blocks away.😅 We won’t see the same traffic or sales, but at least we won’t be miserable. Especially if the weather takes a sudden turn like it did last night. #today

You know when you've been using grammar correctly for a long time because it's just kind of a part of the way the language works? And then suddenly you learn the proper rule? That was me today with coordinate and cumulative adjectives. And as I was doing some edits, I started adding commas between my cumulative adjectives. It felt wrong, so I looked it up... And it was wrong. Now I need to fix the chaos I hath wrought. https://kristenstieffel.com/when-to-use-commas-between-adjectives/...

Goodness, I should sleep well tonight. #Today: - Did some line edits on a chapter - Was a guest at the local anime convention - Took over the opening ceremonies when the organizers disappeared and so I bestowed Squidly Blessings upon the crowd - Chatted with lots of cool local artists and creators - Went to an epic art reception (complete with music, poetry, and drag) which included a photograph of me And up early tomorrow for more convention in the morning! What a day 😴

#3goodthings 1. A day spent with my mom. Garage sales, helping out around the house. 2. Some helpful critiques for my writing. 3. A kickass art show featuring two dozen local artists. What a lovely day. Now I am tired and will have ice cream. Ooh, good thing number four 😉 #today #writing #MothersDay #art #localart #saskatoon

#ScribesAndMakers 2. Finishing a project: good enough or something more? I think of this piece, Finished—Not Perfect. Perfection is the enemy. It’s a goalpost that moves. You can work a piece to the point of wrecking it. Good enough is a fine place. It doesn’t mean you didn’t strive or push yourself to create something amazing, or the work itself isn’t awesome. It just means that it’s in a good enough state to move on. Art: @AudraBalionArt #art #writingcommunity #creativity

#ScribesAndMakers 4/29 Someone else promotion day. Tell us about someone else's work. Let's boost away. Let me share local comic artist and all-around amazing person: @elainemwill Elaine does beautiful work and gave voice to mental health at a time when it was not widely spoken of. I’m just honoured and lucky to count Elaine amongst my friends. Check out some awesome things: https://ko-fi.com/elainemwill/shop #comics #art #artist #indieartist #writingcommunity #saskatoon

April snow brings May’s woe. Chilly this morning but not too bad at only -6°C (43°F). It’s Friday, so that’s the biggest win. Today’s agenda: work, visit my parents, disassociate until I forget that it’s snowing. Merry Christmas everyone! #today #snow #saskatchewan #saskatoon #april #spring #weather

Buses are such interesting little worlds. I’ve taken transit all my life. I’ve made “bus friends” and had a little community as a part of my morning commute. I’ve had amusing conversations with drunks. I’ve seen fights and creeps and smelled awful things. I’ve taken candy from an old man and chatted with an old lady who was crying. And I’ve shut myself out and listened to my headphones. I think we would all do well to take the bus more often. #transit #community #bus

#WordWeavers Apr 6: Creating on the fly. I do a bit of improv on occasion and I run D&D on the regular so this kind of extreme pantsing is my wheelhouse. This weekend I was voted Prime Minister of Canada because I pulled a bunch of nonsense out. The best, though, was an unintended hook: a rumour of a shadow dragon terrorizing the people of Celanadin. That turned into a whole thing. I will say, I needed to make a lot of plans to make that hit after the fact. 😅

Hey there #ttrpg and #dnd friends! Anyone have any favourite tricks up the sleeve for a chronomancer? We have a big battle coming up and I have some ideas, but would love to know if anyone else has some fun things they have tried/seen. Fun stat blocks, spells, and shenanigans all welcome.

My partner and I were interviewed by Punch TV to talk about our book #CrownOfHorns! It’s a great interview. Interview takes up the first ten mins, includes some cosplay of one of the characters, talking about how it all came to be, and some kind reviews from the hosts! https://m.youtube.com/watch?fbclid=IwQ0xDSwK53bxleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHqEqxA7pNUNMuIL9TaT4LuBr-nJ3wQ5Sqn5IeRm_qibsmSR3xucZDj4lm9ag_aem_AbG6oISjpWu2piS4plL7Ig&v=zlMt3GEyrpk&feature=youtu.be #bookstodon #books #fantas...

Yesterday, my partner and I celebrated our 15th anniversary. Our anniversary was actually a week before, but we weren’t feeling well and the “celebration” fell a little flat. So we went for an adventure yesterday. When we thanked our server for such a lovely evening, she disappeared. Minutes later, the lights dimmed, the music went up, and the whole staff came out to cheer. It was so sweet and kind. Made our night! If you’re in #Vancouver, visit Rajio Japanese Public House. A pure delight.

There’s still a few weeks of summer and I got this lovely feedback from a band teacher who got my book. She called it the perfect summer read. She especially enjoyed tie-ins to Ukrainian history and culture through the narrative and in the designs by @AudraBalionArt If you’re looking for a read that gets more and more nail-biting the further you go, then have I got the book for you. Shameless someone-else-promotion day. #scribesandmakers I’d love to highlight a real-world friend @MarkAllardWill He’s kickstarting a unique photo book, partnering up with artists across Canada to illustrate his photos. Not only is it a really cool project, but Mark is one of the kindest folks I know. He uplifts the local community, he pays artists appropriately for their work, and he is just an absolute delight. Audra: “So, there are two words for ‘now’ in Ukrainian: зараз and тепер. And I have never thought of the word зараз as now, I always had it in my head that it meant soon… And now I’m wondering if this explains…” Me: “… why you’re always late?” Audra: “I guess… I think it’s actually a disconnect. Like, you ask if I’m on the way and you think I mean now, but I don’t. I actually mean soon.” 😆 #ukrainian #language #timeblindness #adhd
