Has anyone ever done research on BlPOC #ev owners and our level of range anxiety? Is it higher than non-BIPOC EV owners? Context: I'm constantly terrified of my battery running down in an unfamiliar area & having to find a charging station because I have no clue who I'll encounter and what their reaction will be. Non-BIPOC folks I talk to don't seem to be as terrified as I am. Just curious. #electricvehicles #electriccars EDIT: Untagged blackfedi & blackmastodon to open convo.

@rashunda So I don't have an answer about this specific question, but I do think I read something that's relevant. Some social scientists were comparing how race and gender in the USA impact risk perception. They're paper is called "Gender, race, and perceived risk: the `white male’ effect". https://sites.stat.columbia.edu/gelman/stuff_for_blog/finucane.pdf Basically the further down you are in the white supremacist hierarchy the more one perceives various activities as risky. "Our survey also revealed that whites rate risks lower than do nonwhites. Nonwhite females often gave the highest risk ratings. The group with the consistently lowest risk perceptions across a range of hazards was white males, a result replicating the earlier research." So it feels consistent to me that people for whom the world tends to be more risky are going to be more worried about EV range.

@rashunda That is my biggest concern. If I’m trying to escape the volcano or tsunami, can I get far enough that electricity is available even.

@rashunda I map out where the charging stations are that I'll need, as well as fall back ones close enough if the first tier don't work. So I haven't had the problem of wandering through no man's land looking for help. Without the planning and not knowing whether I'd make it or not? You bet I'd be worried!

@rashunda what is giving me range anxiety is the inconsistency of distance coverage of a charge as other variables need to be considered for accurate estimate but that’s not transparent to me for refueling calculus e.g. If I leave home with car charged at 89%, what distance does that cover? For petrochemical fuel, the level gauge is a good indicator. For EV, give me the variables that impact that pattern so I can make informed choices, like when & where I stop to refuel to get to my destination.
