Saw several recent posts saying if governments enforced clean air in schools, the pandemic would be over. No, it would not, for technical and social reasons. I had the misfortune to live in a state where the government once tried to do the right thing, and the people absolutely sabotaged it. First I must stress: REDUCE CLASSROOM INFECTIONS BY A THIRD (best result of clean air) means YOU STILL FUCKING LOST. The child finishes school with 4 infections instead of 6. They still have a brain full of Lewy bodies and syncytia, scarred lungs, fucked kidneys, fucked cancer surveillance, shortened telomeres, cardiovascular damage, autoimmunity, metabolic derangement, infected grandparents, cats and dogs living together etc. etc. Fuck right off with your "harm reduction". This is related to the fact that you only mitigate near field transmission with a respirator, and when you pack 30 small humans into 64m2, you get a lot of near field transmission. Well what does it even matter now? It already happened, to nearly everyone. Lets improve the air quality in schools! Schools here received an updated operations guide, regarding ventilation and filtration. These were directives, not optional. They now appear to be suggestions. https://www2.education.vic.gov.au/pal/ventilation-air-purification/policy All schools eventually received at least one air filter per classroom (most two). So they had the filters, they had instructions to be aware of ventilation, to keep windows open, to move classes outside, to keep classes separate, no combined assembly, etc. etc. The teachers tolerated it for a few months, then started closing the windows, turning the air filters off, eventually hiding the air filters, then even selling the air filters. No, let's recirculate air! Additionally our school had evaporative cooling units on all classrooms, which is 100% fresh air. They replaced these with refrigerated air conditioning in 2022, which is 100% RECIRCULATED air. I would try and explain, peoples' eyes lost focus, even so-called CCC. Think Nigel Tufnel "These go to eleven". Completely beyond them. Result: So now the school air quality is measurably worse than in 2019. We've fucking gone backwards, and it was EVERYBODY who got on board and did this in a reactionary FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME manner, despite everything being paid for and delivered to them by the government. This in the keep-telling-ourselves-we're-the-most-progressive state in Australia. There's a lot more I left out (masks in schools). People are very strange. Sometimes they will pull together and do something worthwhile, other times they will collectively shoot themselves in the genitals. None of it makes any sense. Maybe randomly one day everyone will suddenly want infection control? FIIK. Well what would you do instead? I watched clean air and masks fail. Conceptually interesting, absolutely didn't work in real primary schools. Young children are simply incapable of rigorously mitigating against a BSL-3 pathogen. If you are honest with yourself, the concept is absurd. Primary school teachers aren't much better. I currently think real time virus detection via continuous air sampling might work. But the world has moved on. 🤷
