Testimonial iconici e sbarco negli "smoke shop"
Why did the BIC lighters giant decide to bet on marijuana in the US?
AGI - BIC, the historic French giant famous worldwide for pens, razors, and disposable lighters, has prepared a completely unexpected plan to relaunch its profits in the United States: to capture marijuana consumers.
In response to the progressive decline in traditional tobacco consumption, the group decided decisively to shift towards the thriving cannabis business linked to recreational and therapeutic sectors in the USA.
Why is it betting on the cannabis market?
The idea stemmed from a market observation: in the United States, marijuana consumption is growing at dizzying rates. Although federally the substance remains prohibited, over 20 American states have already liberalized its recreational use, while most of the country allows for its medical use.
"I come from Amsterdam, but consumption in the United States is increasing much faster than it ever did in the Netherlands," explained BIC CEO Rob Versloot to analysts, having taken the helm of the group to revive the company's accounts after years of stagnation.
In the first half of the year, the lighter division accounted for approximately one-third of BIC’s total revenue, despite a global turnover down 3.5% (amounting to just over one billion euros). This prompted the need to intercept a new customer base.
Iconic Testimonials and Landing in "Smoke Shops"
To capture the attention of American consumers, BIC revived its historic 1970s advertising slogan “Flick my Bic” and formed strategic alliances with celebrities who love cannabis culture, including rap legend Snoop Dogg, country icon Willie Nelson, and lifestyle queen Martha Stewart.
But the real revolution concerns the distribution network. In addition to traditional supermarkets and large retail chains, management aims to position lighters in over 15-20 thousand specialized stores (“smoke shops”) scattered across the USA. As confirmed by Haven Cockerham, head of operations in North America, these sales points represent the key opportunity to directly intercept customers and provide a decisive boost to sales.

Willie Nelson: Stardust (Columbia JC35305, 1978)
My high school girlfriend made fun of me after we watched Steve Martin/Lily Tomlin’s “All of Me” because I thought it was a Willie Nelson song. Turns out it’s a standard, but I only knew it from Stardust. I’ve since delved deeply into the Great American Songbook but these are still my favorite versions.
