So #Telstra was feeding all their network gear straight from Stratum 1 servers. If they had intermediary Stratum 2 servers in play with constraint facilities, the bad 2006-reset Stratum 1 server would have been ignored, saving the network from complete disaster. #mytake https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/jul/17/telstra-missing-software-update-undocumented-design-change-outage

Hmmm, I'll back #Telstra here. Network kit isn't like a consumer mobile phone. It doesn't need to be replaced as frequently as your telly #auspol

@jhaue@aus.social The #Telstra failure is a result of greed and incompetence. Not all disasters are preventable... ...but this was software upgrade and those are reversible is they go south. Not that they should go south...because critical systems ought to have critical testing.

The absolute audacity of the #telstra CFO to get up and say they don’t know why a national outage impacting huge numbers of people, businesses and essential services has happened or when it is getting fixed but that it is probably only impacting thousands not tens of thousands of people around the country and that we can still trust Telstra. Oh.. Telstra fault looks like core network issue! It seems a heap of prefixes (blocks of Telstra network addresses) just got updated through different routes at 3am (i.e. the Internet suddenly realised they can't reach parts of Telstra so there was a mad scramble to find alternate routes!)
